Possibly my most important Internet legacy so far! Support the Internet Archive, folks.
Here's a sample of the work: Thousands of games, cross-referenced by genre/publisher etc and, thanks to Jason & team, playable right now in your browser. archive.org/search.php?query…

I made a Take a Break headline generator. Featured in the @DiveCreep podcast apparently 🙏

the energy cost of ai isn't in the use of models that anyone can do locally on their computer. but from the massive initial training on all of the stolen data of the internet that the big companies like openai and google do

This popped up in my feed today - boasting about AI and a 'No Strike Policy' - seems very suspicious and no mention of who funds it. Dark money? One for @PeterKGeoghegan and pals.

If you put needless mandatory text fields in forms, you’re wasting my time. I’ll waste yours right back with my usual placeholder text, “[ object Promise ]”.

Guess who’s back on android phones? That’s right! Our little rabbit friend!
We have fought through:
⁃ “IMEI checks”
We discovered these literally don’t exist and you still can just use any string as IMEI
⁃ Other header checks
These are obfuscated across a few files and even a c++ extension, but they aren’t secure at all. We patched these into the app file and also patched it to not require system level permissions anymore.
⁃ Sleep schedules
We needed to stay up late because the only person which had physical access has the opposite timezone as the rest of us.
⁃ IP bans
A few members of the team including me got IP banned from the servers, fortunately we don’t care and I was in a vacation home.
⁃ Acquiring an updated app
This was hellish but we figured out a way eventually to dump the original ROM and patch OTA updates onto it.
⁃ Blocked http inspection tools
The app now uses certificate pinning, we can probably patch that out but for now we haven’t needed it.
This is the current latest OTA update with the latest app.
There are a lot of fakes and knockoff apps going around twitter, and information about rooting of the device, but we have access to the official dumped app, the official servers, and a valid method to dump the entire ROM. No cheating here.
Please note that we will not be sharing any files.
Thanks to these amazing people: @EmilyLShepherd @ChromMob @thel3l @uwukko @schlizzawg
There are also some other people who rather don’t want to be mentioned.
Also a huge thanks to @MishaalRahman for the credibility and sticking with us through the process. No one would have trusted us if some of us just posted it.

For me, the distinction is that journalists like @CaseyNewton or myself are often citing sources to back up a story on which we're commenting as part of a broader piece (and should link for credit). Tech and AI are answering questions wholesale without commentary or any additional input. There's nothing original about it. Sometimes there's credit (now, after a year of use going "WTF?! to ChatGPT"), but no opp. for me to drive people to the site where I can make a pitch to get free or paid subscribers (or for them to see ads or sponsorships, but @TheShortcut doesn't have banner ads). That's been stripped away.
It's a lot like a TikTok / IG Reel / YouTube Shorts that comments on someone else's video (fair use) with a snippet of the original video, vs the new trend of just green screening yourself in the corner and nodding your head in an effort to bank off of the original work.
When I was the first to launch a Rabbit R1 review last week, I asked its LLM (backed by Perplexity AI) "What do you think of the Rabbit R1?" It read back to me chunks of my [negative] review text with unmistakable phrases I came up with and published. No credit and no cut of the $199 for the creator (me). Perplexity Pro costs $20 a month (same price as ChatGPT). Charging consumers a fee for siphoning off journalists' content is WORSE than Napster in the late 90s / early 2000s (at least Napster was letting you steal music without profiting from the theft via direct payments).
You're right. The system is broken. But know that if my work (and the work of my small team at @TheShortcut) is redistributed like this (without any ads or pitch to upsell a subscription), we won't be able to produce content – and the "answers" for AI and "Search summaries" will get worse and worse.

So Google just decided to close my Google Drive account for a ToS violation that never happened, I'm trying to appeal but there's a good chance I'll lose hundreds of GB of pictures, important data and whatnot. Do I know anybody that can help? :/

This is a textbook example of disinformation disseminated by the Irish far-right.
All of it lapped up by an audience of hateful sycophants with zero interest in truth.

Blatant lies and omissions. /1
