The Green Bay defense does something no other NFL defense does on film. Instead of rotating from two-high shells into Cover 3, Jonathan Gannon flips his disguises, moving from closed to open post coverages. By moving single-high looks into split-field shells, Evan Williams could poach Digs from near the line of scrimmage, cratering Dak Prescott to a 20.6 rating and leading to critical interceptions. Against the Cowboys, the Packers paired "Nail" and "Sand" B-gap pressures with shifts into Quarters and Cover 6 (QQH) to disrupt slide protection and confuse Dak Prescott. Pressure speeds up the clock; disguise creates doubt. ...

A bad game doesn't define your season. Evaluate the film honestly. Identify the 2–3 corrections that matter most. Build practice around those priorities. Hold players accountable, examine your own decisions, and move forward. #TXHSFBCHAT txhsfbchat.substack.com/p/re…

Never used numbers and concepts.I am no huddle, I use code words now. When I used numbers, we used both a run number and a pass number. Inside Zone was 22 & 23. Call at the line 22 - 88, 22 - 88. Now using code word, Wide Zone could be Wisconsin (left) Badgers (right).

Mike Tomlin says leadership is lonely because assistants make suggestions, but the final decision and the responsibility always belongs to you “I just think more than anything, and this was told to me early on, and it’s a real thing, assistants make suggestions and head coaches make decisions. And you have to be comfortable with that.” “Certainly, you’ve got to take in information, and when you have experienced assistants like I did, that information is oftentimes very good. But you’ve got to be really comfortable with the fact that the responsibility is yours. The decisions are yours.” “And there’s a certain loneliness to leadership, and that’s okay. I discovered that, and really I discovered that I was okay with that. There is a certain loneliness with leadership, but it comes with the territory.”

Rather than chasing the league meta of two-high shells that roll into Cover 3 and Quarters, Al Golden built Cincinnati’s defense around a unique blend of heavy Cover 1 and rotational Cover 6. To protect his secondary and his LBs, Golden calls Cover 6 (QQH) in Base and Cover 8 (HQQ) in Nickel. But he doesn't abandon his man-match principles. In Base, the boundary CB runs a "Fist" check (2-man), letting the Safety climb and bracket deep crossing routes from the Quarters side while protecting the defense from early-down play-action shots. The front forms an aggressive five-man wall against the run, while the layered backend compresses passing windows, allowing zero split-field touchdowns. Disguise protects the secondary; structure kills the shot. ...

If we in the education field want to draw in more high quality (or just any) teachers, it would serve us well to stop complaining all the time. Upon returning from a conference last week multiple of my students said they are questioning their choice of becoming a teacher based on how poorly the keynote spoke of the profession....At a future teacher conference.

Your playbook might be TOO BIG! Less plays. More formations. Same concepts, more problems for the defense. Stop adding plays. Start creating answers. Video below!

How do you teach Inside Zone? We're starting a 4 part Inside Zone clinic in our weekly Office Hour series. Part 1 is now in the GameDay Systems Vault. I break down our covered/uncovered rules, how we identify blocking responsibilities, and examples against even and odd fronts. Next week: Our calls and footwork against different fronts. Just real coaching. How we teach it.

Late Night Retired Coach’s #WednesdayWisdom I’m a firm believer in execution & fundamentals win games. There is something truly beautiful watching a high school team achieve excellence in execution & fundamentals with relatively old school schemes - Wing T, Power I or Veer to name a few. It truly empowers your players to win the game by executing physical fundamentals. I use to tell the players if they need me as a coach to win the games, they had better be close to start the 4th - ahead by 7 or less or behind by 7 or less. That’s is where I as a coach can make a in game contribution. Great Coaches create programs where they empower the kids to win games.

Texas Compress Tackling Drill - Set up five numbered cones (one through five) on both sides, spaced ten yards apart and mirrored across from each other. - Assign two defenders specific cone numbers (such as two and four or one and three) while allowing the offensive ball carrier to choose any cone from one to five. - Force defenders to adjust to dynamic leverage changes caused by the varying starting cones assigned to each player. - Coach the two defenders to work together, feel each other's hips and shoulders, and compress on the ball carrier. - Execute this drill, known as the Texas compress drill, to train proper pursuit and leverage principles. - Run the drill using either a tap tempo or a thud tempo depending on team preference.
