Frank Gagliano was a college quarterback.
After his career, he was hired to start a football team at a high school. While waiting, he coached track. They never started the football team.
Gags went on to become one of the greatest American distance coaches in history: 15 Olympians, 140 All-Americans, 43 sub-4 milers.
He passed away this week.
We often think that you've got to have done it or experienced it to coach it. Gags was never a runner. He just wanted to coach, the true essence of the word, helping people out.
“I don’t have golf clubs. I have a stopwatch." And like the best 'old school' coaches, he'd help whoever showed up.
I was a former high school phenom, struggling in college. Then I got a call from an unknown number.
"Steve. We've never met. It's Gags with the Farm Team. I just wanted you to know that you're great. Talent doesn't go away. Stick with it. You've got people who believe in you. If I can ever help, let me know."
He called a struggling 19-year-old out of nowhere, while running the best professional team in the country.
In an era where training got really complicated, Gags kept it simple. His philosophy was strength + speed, consistently for a long freaking time.
“Everyone has to be patient in development. Everyone has to enjoy the sport, have a lot of fun, and work really hard.”
More than the workouts, his real secret was the one every great coach shares. Relationships. His son Ralph put it best:
“As a track coach, you have very large teams, many participants, and he carried over the years very special relationships — not only with the great ones, but even with the ordinary athlete.”
He was still coaching into his late 80s.
“As long as my mind is in the sport for workouts, so I don’t deprive the men and women that I’m coaching, I’ll keep coaching.”
And this summer, at 89, when they named a national championship race after him, “I’m not a cocky man. I’m the guy that just coaches, and the athletes mean everything to me, everything.”
He was a coach’s coach. Someone who lost his first meet 112 to 15, and then went on to become an all-time great...despite never having run.
Because the point was to help people....even those he didn't coach.
RIP Gags.

Coaches, I built this desktop app for Macs. Its called "Speed Cut" and it will clip all your College and NFL film for you to upload to hudl or anywhere else. It is very fast and very accurate. If you could use this to make your off season study easier shoot me a DM!

Coaches, I built a desktop app. Macs only. Its a film splitter for people doing off season studies. Its user friendly and really basic but also wildly accurate and pretty quick. Its been a lot of fun to work on and it does a good job. Let me know if you're interested. Thanks!

If you don’t have any plays in your offense from under center you’re doing your team and your quarterback a disservice.
I see so many teams on 4th and inches or near the goal line or backed up on their own 1 still running out of the spread.
Not everyone is gonna be a pro I get it,

Charlie Strong says he interviewed for around 20 head coaching jobs and kept getting rejected again and again, and says it wasn’t until Lou Holtz gave him a reason to keep interviewing that was bigger than himself that he landed the Louisville job
“It really started for me just being an assistant coach and interviewing for all of these jobs, and I never could get one. I bet I interviewed for 20 jobs. I was an assistant, and I can remember I was at South Carolina with Lou Holtz and Mike McGee was the AD.”
“They would actually interview me before I went on my interview. I would sit down with Coach Holtz, and he’d be like, ‘No, you can’t say that. This is the way we’re going to answer that.’ Then I’d go see Mike McGee, and he’d say, ‘These are the questions that the AD wants to hear, and these are the answers that you’ve got to give them.’ So then I would go on the interview, and people would say, ‘Well, he didn’t do a good job.’ And I’m sitting there like, ‘I know I did a good job.’ I’m not going to even hear that.”
“So one day I went to Coach Holtz and I said, ‘Coach, I’m not doing it anymore.’ He said, ‘What do you mean you’re not doing it anymore?’ I said, ‘Coach, I just feel like I’m a token. I’m just going on all these interviews and I’m getting none of the jobs. Every time they say he’s a poor interviewer and he’s not prepared, and I was prepared. Coach had given me all the information. I was probably overly prepared.’”
“He said, ‘You can’t do that.’ And I said, ‘Why not?’ He said, ‘There are a lot of African-American coaches who are not getting the opportunity that you’re getting. So if you say you don’t want to do it, then those are guys who may not get that opportunity because they’re going to look at you and say, “Well, Charlie’s saying he doesn’t want to do this anymore.” So now, since he’s saying that, there’s no need in me going to interview someone else.’”
“I can remember I was at the University of Florida and we had just won a national championship. Up until that time, whoever won a national championship, one of the coordinators got a job. And I didn’t get one.”
“We go recruiting, and it’s Urban and myself, and Urban’s like, ‘I just got a phone call, and I feel bad for you, and I’ve got to tell you, one of our coaches is going to get a head coaching job and they didn’t ask about you.’ And I said, ‘You know what, Urban? I’m so over it now. The only thing I can do now is do the job that I do and hope that I do a good enough job that someone else, that they will look at another brother and he can get a job off of the work that I’m doing. I’m past that now.’”

Anybody have an assistant coaching manual or guide for your program you wouldn’t mind sharing?
Trying to establish one this offseason.

The older I get in this profession, the more I realize that knowing football and knowing how to coach are two different things.
Knowledge doesn’t always translate to impact.
The best coaches know how to reach their players, not just teach them.
Coaches, what’s something experience taught you that a playbook never could?
Will be a ton of growth on this thread!

A staff can be full of capable coaches and still give players mixed messages, enforce expectations inconsistently, and avoid conversations that need to happen.
Individual expertise doesn’t guarantee collective effectiveness.
The development, alignment, and accountability you want in the players' locker room have to START in the staff room.
Head coaches have finite time, energy, and attention, but when investing in the development and alignment of their staff keeps getting postponed, the entire program can pay for it.

The Green Bay defense does something no other NFL defense does on film.
Instead of rotating from two-high shells into Cover 3, Jonathan Gannon flips his disguises, moving from closed to open post coverages.
By moving single-high looks into split-field shells, Evan Williams could poach Digs from near the line of scrimmage, cratering Dak Prescott to a 20.6 rating and leading to critical interceptions.
Against the Cowboys, the Packers paired "Nail" and "Sand" B-gap pressures with shifts into Quarters and Cover 6 (QQH) to disrupt slide protection and confuse Dak Prescott.
Pressure speeds up the clock; disguise creates doubt.

Never used numbers and concepts.I am no huddle, I use code words now. When I used numbers, we used both a run number and a pass number. Inside Zone was 22 & 23. Call at the line 22 - 88, 22 - 88. Now using code word, Wide Zone could be Wisconsin (left) Badgers (right).
