Two thousand years ago, someone carried a sheet of Appalachian mica more than 400 miles into Ohio, cut it into a human hand nearly a foot tall, then buried it inside a mound.

This was dug out of a burial mound in downtown Cincinnati in 1841. It’s only about five inches long, probably 2,000–2,500 years old, and covered in one of the strangest Adena designs ever found in the Ohio Valley.

About 700 years ago at Spiro in Oklahoma, someone carved this face from wood, set shell into the eyes and mouth, gave it deer antlers, then buried it in Craig Mound. Still one of the strangest things ever pulled from an American mound.
