A skill I learned late was defining a good North Star. I see product makers pick simplistic North Star Metrics and not be able to articulate what even is a North Star. When done right, the North Star Metric can help you grow faster. This quick (and simple) primer can help. 🧵
The most normalized open extortion in Indian middle class life:
The Sub Registrar office on property registration day.
You spend 10 years saving every rupee from your salaried job.
You pay 30% TDS on your income.
You pay 7% official stamp duty online via net banking.
You pay 1% registration fee through a government treasury challan.
Every single paisa is accounted for on your bank statement.
Then you reach the government registration office with your builder or seller:
The deed writer pulls you aside into a dusty corridor:
"Sir, ₹25,000 to ₹40,000 cash alag se lagega for the desk. Official receipt nahi milegi."
You: "Bhaiya, I already paid ₹4.5 lakhs in official government stamp duty online!"
Agent smiles with complete indifference:
"Sir, mat do. Phir file 'Property Under Valuation' mark hoke audit me chali jayegi. 6 mahine chakkar kaatna."
You stand in an airless hallway, walk to the nearest ATM, withdraw ₹30,000 cash, and slip it inside the file folder just to get your own thumb impression scanned.
We aren't a digital, cashless economy.
We are a country where honest taxpayers have to withdraw physical cash just to get legal permission to own what they already paid for.
Did your property registration happen 100% clean, or did you have to pay the "corridor settlement fee" too?

1 in 7 rupees in India did not exist a year ago.
M3 money supply grew 16% this year. Inflation, on paper, is 5.5%.
This is the most under-discussed, persistent problem in the Indian economy. This 16% “hidden tax” is starting to show up everywhere:
1. Gold is up 17% in INR - almost exactly the M3 money supply increase. Interesting, right?
2. Domestic GST collections are up 15.8%. Also almost exactly the growth in money supply. The “record GST” is just taxing more money being printed.
3. GST on imports is up 42%, because the rupee fell 7.6%, on top of increased costs. We shouldn’t celebrate paying more tax on the same iPhone.
4. The most egregious one: 7.8% real GDP growth assumes prices across the whole economy rose just 2.3%. (Nominal GDP grew 10.3%. Use the 5.5% CPI instead and real growth is closer to 4.5%.) Does your lived experience validate a laughable 2.3% inflation?
5. The one thing that did NOT keep up is your portfolio. Since 1997, money supply is up 44x and the Sensex is up 20x. Put every INR you had into Indian stocks for 30 years and the money printer beat you by 2X.
Taxes keep going up. Capital controls keep tightening. Inflation keeps going up. The structural problems, courts, land, labour and the cost of capital, stay exactly where they were, hidden under a nominal GDP number. We are printing like there’s no tomorrow and pretending nothing is wrong.
Ludwig von Mises called inflation “the true opium of the people administered to them by anti-capitalist governments and parties.”
Printing is the easiest way to keep welfare flowing and the headlines green without fixing a single structural problem. Inflation is the most immoral tax that we pay, without knowing we’re paying it.

The horrific attacks on young schoolgirls in Panchkula, Haryana & Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh cannot be viewed in isolation. They stem from a culture that normalises violence, glorifies toxic machismo, and gives internet incels platforms like X to legitimise misogyny.

The worst thing about the whole Rajasthan Bereaucratic duo and their corruption is the sheer brazenness of it.
When you take bribe in cash or gold and then hide it in a false panel between your hall and the attic, there is still an element of fear there. You are afraid of being caught. You know you are doing something illegal and you want to hide it.
Here it was not that
Buying an entire resort is something that is in a different planet when it comes to corruption. Because you can't hide it.
This was bound to come out in the open.
And when it came out, it would have been clear that it was an act of massive corruption. Everyone would talk about the sheer scale of its illegality
But they still didn't care.
Because They knew nothing is going to happen to them. Nobody is going to punish them. They will never face any consequence.
They knew they will continue in their present jobs and will soon buy their next resort.
It is also cleat that they have stopped fearing the law.
They gave a rats ass about rules, regulation.
They spit in the face of punishment when they went ahead with this.
And this is dangerous
Because, when people stop being afraid of punishment and the law, society starts breaking down.

The Indian Government saw Capital Markets as a place to collect revenue rather than as a place to create Wealth.
Most of the IAS folks who work in the Finance Ministry do not even understand ABC of Capital markets. We have seen their world class Governance when they managed Naala Naalis of Indian towns and cities.

Q2 FY27 was a very strong quarter for us at @atherenergy. We’re seeing demand grow at a pace that requires us to significantly step up our manufacturing capacity. Pre-orders reached a record 1.80 lakh during the quarter, more than doubling year-on-year, with growth broad-based across regions.
To meet this demand, we’re adding 2.25 lakh units of annual production capacity across our Hosur and AURIC facilities. This will take our total installed capacity to ~4.9L units by Q3 FY27 and to 11.4 lakh units by Q2 FY28.
We also made meaningful progress on our financial performance, driven by higher volumes, tighter cost control and improving unit economics. We recorded our second consecutive quarter of positive EBITDA, with strong topline growth despite rising commodity prices and supply chain disruptions:
• Total income: ₹1,527 crore 🔼 62% YoY
• EBITDA margin: 4.9%, improving ~1,450 bps YoY
• PAT: ₹1.26 crore
• Volumes: 93,211 units 🔼 42% YoY
Thank you to our customers for their continued trust, and to our teams and partners for their efforts!

Or how Modi destroyed the India story. All the gains of his predecessors ground to dust, and the chickens of his deeds have come to roost in the 13th year as PM. As this investor says, it is neither global factors nor AI, it is all about abysmal governance.
"I can state with confidence that, in 36 years of interaction with FPIs, we have never seen such dismay and irritation with India."

Bureaucrats have lost all fear of law and accountability and like politicians, are literally looting the country at will. No other way to put this.
As per Dainik Bhaskar, Rajasthan IAS officer Shikhar Agarwal, his wife, IPS officer Prashakha Mathur, their two daughters and their in-laws collectively purchased 40 villas and cottages in Ananta Resort in Bujhda, Udaipur, and a resort in Ajabgarh, Alwar, through Goyal Fashions Private Limited, at a reported cost of Rs 6.15 crore. The properties were subsequently leased to the same company for an annual lease amount of Rs 1.80 crore, according to the report.
The newspaper further reported that the family purchased 28 villas and cottages in Bujhda and Ajabgarh in the names of Shikhar Agarwal and Prashakha Mathur's family members, while only 14 properties were reflected in their annual immovable property returns (IPRs). The report states that the transactions involved the officer, his wife, their two daughters and four properties purchased by his in-laws.

Just another Sunday afternoon in SF: I paid $60 for 2 humanoid robots to clean for an hour.
Here's how it went:
(1) What happened: Sergey and Chelsea (the names of the two robots) finished about 80% of one floor in an hour: tidying, wiping down surfaces, vacuuming, mopping, cleaning the toilet.
- They came with a staff engineer at the company, who dropped them off and picked them up after an hour.
- They were controlled by 1 human operator each, in the Mission where the company office is at.
- The engineer gave me a number to text them, I texted a request to wipe the mirror. They did it.
(2) Performance and dexterity: Chelsea dropped a toy, struggled with a pillow, and had trouble balancing on the playmat. But overall, for all the tasks they did, grippers were enough. 5 fingers were not needed.
- The engineer told me the hardest task for them was making bed.
- They were quite loud, stomping around the house. Took a bit of time to get used to. They both wore gripper socks which protected the floors and helped them not slip.
- Interaction: I didn't know they can respond via voice. In the end they were conversing with us in voice which was nice.
(3) Unexpected observation: Their pants and shirts have holes in them. It's because they were dragged on and off the vans that transported them.
(4) Other user feedback: I shared my experience with some friends afterwards.
A user told me that unloading dishwasher was an "advanced task". They didn't attempt at mine since it was running at the time they were working. Another user said they scratched their hardwood floor. That's probably why they now wear gripper socks.
(5) Did they do as well as human cleaners? In terms of the tasks they did, I think so. In terms of speed, they were ~80% speed of humans when it comes to the more delicate tasks, but I would say they are quite smooth. They didn't finish the whole place, so it wasn't a full service.
(6) How does the math work out?
Each booking was only for 1 hour, since their batteries need to be swapped after 1 hour. So they didn't finish the place.
For a user: In SF, it's ~$200-220 to clean a full home around my neighborhood, with two human cleaners. Usually it takes around 2.5 hours. So around $40/manhour. This is $30/robot hour. Slightly cheaper, but again it's not fully finished with the 1 hour they were available.
For the company: It took 2 robots, 2 human operators, 1 staff member to dropoff/pickup, and 1 driver of the van to transport the robot. Definitely labor intensive. But they also retain the data they collect for training purposes.
(7) My biggest takeaway as a user: interaction / hospitality mattered. One of the humanoids was more friendly (Sergey), he waved at us when he came in. It'd have been great if they both introduced themselves in the beginning.
Beyond that, being able to do 2 hour slots (instead of one) would be great to finish the cleaning.
Overall, I appreciated their work and the fact that they got the robots out in people's homes. Deployment is not easy and so much learning from it each time

Was telling a friend. India’s problem that it is facing right now is that the new money, not just for the rich, but for the upper middle class are not seeing the civic governance gains that the old money sees. Old money - Jayanagara Indira Nagar, HR BR layout, Alwarpet, T Nagar Adyar have much better quality of living while new money Bellandur Whitefield, Varthur, North Bangalore, Thorai Pakkam, Perungudi, Sholinganallur, Perumbakkam, all suffer with nil urban civic amenities and governance.

Indigo is a scammy airline.
The prime passes they give as part of BLU upgrades are never enabled when booking a flight.
Today they changed the aircraft and people who paid for the emergency seats for extra legroom got bumped back to normal seats. When pointed out the crew says they can’t do anything! You can write to an email ID! We don’t take onboard complaints anymore.

Had this man not found the courage to fight back after being repeatedly attacked with an axe capable of cutting through metal—while bleeding profusely—and had the presence mind to trigger the hijack/emergency code, initiate the emergency response and open the cockpit door to allow passengers to assist him, the aircraft’s subsequent dive could have had catastrophic consequences.
Had that aircraft not been recovered, the geopolitical consequences for the Middle East could have been profound and potentially irreversible.
Sometimes history turns on the courage, resilience and presence of mind of one person.
Yes. One Indian man.
