I love how the council’s hearing on tax increases has just unleashed a torrent of commentary on just how unwise and inefficient their governance has been. Highest taxes in the region, poor basic services and everyday new embarrassing, harebrained ideas

I would sincerely love our Council to take a minute to imagine a person who lives in DC, has a job, is a net fiscal contributor, and doesn't commit crimes.
What have you done over the past year to improve the life of someone like that? What will you do next year?
Perhaps because our city council has trouble grasping concepts like second order consequences and … math.
Jumping in from vacation (👋 from Paris) to share my latest for @CityCast_DC. I spoke with some of DC's most prolific developers to get a sense of why building in the city has slowed. TLDR: Investors don't want to put their money into D.C. 🧵dc.citycast.fm/business-deve…

Today's revenue hearing at @councilofdc was limited to invited "tax experts", but whether we have new revenue deeply affects the education budget and many other sectors. Here is my recorded (and submitted) testimony on why we need additional revenue, and what to do. @ChmnMendelson @CMLewisGeorgeW4 @CMZParker5 @chenderson @charlesallen @tweetelissa @BrianneKNadeau @aparnafordc @repoyedc @brookepintodc @CMFrumin @CMWendellFelder @FairBudgetDC @JustRecoveryDC
As you watch this video, it’s worth keeping in mind that the most recent PISA findings showed American 15-year olds are on average SEVEN YEARS behind their Chinese peers in math.
New York Regents member Felicia Thomas-Williams on why she thinks students shouldn’t have to take Regents exams to graduate:
“You don’t assess a fish on climbing a tree because fish can’t climb trees”
Maybe asking a student to read or do math on a test is a little more reasonable than asking a fish to climb a tree? 🤔

Some shocking figures in today's @washingtonpost editorial:
- "Seniors making six figures receive over a third of all Social Security benefits"
- "A husband and wife with an income around $100,000 who turned 65 years old in 2025 are expected to receive 4.4 times as much in Medicare benefits (in present value and net of premiums) as they paid in Medicare payroll taxes..."
America's heading towards bankruptcy, while forcing younger workers to subsidize the comfortable retirement lifestyles of millionaires.
If young people today don't like being told to pull themselves up by their bootstraps, maybe it's because the people giving this advice are some of the largest beneficiaries of welfare.

I confess that the Talbot New Yorker piece on Roberts was worse than I expected.

Ironically, the GGW attitude reminds me a lot of the “I’m not a NIMBY but—” brand of NIMBYs who aren’t officially ~~against~~ new housing in their neighborhoods it’s just this one specific project somehow is never quite right.
Trump just threw the DC mayoral race. 🤦
There’s a great term for this phenomenon: fiscal donut. And DC would be at risk of becoming more of one if its tax base leaves for suburbs. See, eg, Bridgeport, CT. DC would be better served by trying to retain and grow its tax base.

Mayor Bowser was at The Post today for an event where she was interviewed by executive editor Matt Murray, who leads the newsroom. He asked her about the mayoral race. She did not want to weigh in on whether she would endorse, but here's what she said (thread)

it's a poem about a thing that never happened, credited to an author who probably never existed, and helen is introduced within the mythology as the daughter of ZEUS, a figure literally nobody in this country even believes in, if you're emotionally invested in the historicity of her pigmentation you need a life and also medication, not necessarily in that order
I can’t overstate how valuable @mattyglesias and @AshleySchapitl have been as rational Democratic voices leading up to the DC mayoral and council elections. The stakes are very high this cycle.

Some people won’t love this, but Mamdani pivoting from wealth taxes to property taxes is a smart idea because “property” cannot leave the taxing jurisdiction, whereas wealthy people do: wsj.com/us-news/mamdani-warn…
This is hilarious. All of America seems to be trying to read the Epstein files at the same time, and DoJ has created a line for access with a 10 minute cap on the ability to browse.
After yesterday’s OECD news re Estonia, some of you may have wondered how significant the FDI is between the two countries (and by extension whether our treaty is important to them). Here’s the data for 2025: state.gov/reports/2025-inves…
I thought about this point this weekend when I noticed the DC government is now using Rivian trucks. Those are $70k+ vehicles…
