I wanted four things from a notes app on Android: sync across all my devices, end-to-end encryption, a server I host myself, and a UI that doesn't look like it was built for Android KitKat. Nothing had all four. The private, self-hostable options were mostly abandoned years ago and look it. So I built one. NotallyXYZ is a fork of NotallyX (which already had the clean design I liked) with encrypted sync added, plus native apps for macOS, Linux and Windows. How it works: you run a small Go server in Docker. Every note, label and attachment gets encrypted with AES-256 on your device before it goes anywhere, so the server only ever holds ciphertext. It can't read your notes, your label names or your file names, and sizes are padded so it can't even tell how long a note is. There's no account. The first device generates a random 256-bit sync key, you enter it on your other devices and that's it. You never give anyone an email or a password. The rest: • notes, checklists with subtasks, labels, colors, reminders • images, files and audio sync encrypted like the notes • edits show up on your other devices in a few seconds • if two devices edit the same note, you get both versions instead of one silently overwriting the other • zero analytics, ads or Google Play Services • sync is off by default, and without it the Android app makes no network connections at all Android 7+, macOS 26+, Linux, Windows.
