Kitty map! This is how cats migrated to Europe. Great little writeup in the post too: buff.ly/3ttaUWg
When I was nine, our teacher made us write letters to "our heroes" for a writing unit. Most kids chose their parents, or Michael Jordan, or the President. For some reason, I was deeply obsessed with the golden age of piracy, so I wrote my letter to Blackbeard. It was a very aggressive letter demanding to know where he hid his treasure and warning him that "the British Navy is coming for you." My teacher, Mrs. Gable, instead of explaining that Blackbeard had been dead since 1718, actually looked up a historical museum in Ocracoke, North Carolina, and mailed the letter there. Three months later, I got a package at school. It was a hand-stained parchment scroll sealed with actual red wax. The museum staff had written back in character as Blackbeard’s ghost, telling me the treasure was "buried in the minds of those who read books" (which was a bit of a cop-out, honestly), but they also included a replica Spanish piece of eight. I was the coolest kid in third grade for a week.

In 1937, Conrad misjudged a leap as he climbed the rigging of a ship and plunged into the sea. An albatross swooped in to snatch him, but Conrad managed to smack the bird with his paw. Two boys in a rowboat rushed to scoop Conrad out of the water. One of the boys was an orphan who had lost his parents in the Hindenburg disaster earlier that year. Both boys were awarded medals, and Conrad made a full recovery after being given a tot of rum and a generous meal.

The Canon 5D Mark II was released in 2008. It was the first DSLR camera to deliver full-frame 1080p video. A game-changing moment.
It unleashed a new era of shallow focus and remarkably clean low-light imagery.
In 2009, I tested the updated firmware that finally enabled 24fps recording to match the same cadence as 35mm film.
A very empowering time for low-budget filmmakers.

I've been saying "what that means" on like a once every few months basis for the past decade and no one ever knows I'm referencing this

“His theatre was a protest.”
Beyond the Utpal Dutt remembered from Gol Maal, Amol Palekar recalls a fiercely political theatre practitioner — and the lesson he learnt from him: put what you earn from cinema back into theatre.

The best surprise I received in recent times.
Few days ago, in Bangalore, I was playing in Global chess league & immediately from there I had to fly to Uzbekistan for Olympiad.
It was on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi & I was dearly missing Bappa & home. On that day, the hotel staff at ITC Windsor (Mohit & Ankit) had this beautiful surprise ready!
Made me smile ear to ear ♥️
Ganpati Bappa Morya! 🙏
