I'll talk you through the options still available to beat this likely hike, and put your Qs to the Energy Sec of State about what govt will or won't do about it. I'm leaving for the studio now. Don't miss it.

After further calculations, they would make a total of £108,016,720 if they sold each ticket for £40. With 80-90% of stadium shows revenue going to the artists, that would leave Noel and Liam with about £45,000,000 EACH. #oasis @oasis
Worst thing about this Oasis thing is that they could charge every single person £40 and still make more money than anyone in the venue has ever seen

Madeley: ".. welfare.. the elephant in the room.." @AvaSantina: "Its not the elephant in the room" "You don't think we have a problem with our spending on welfare?" No Richard. As Jonathan Portes explained, as a proportion of national income we spend less now than 15 years ago
Portes "Theres a lot of nonsense talked, including on Sky, about the spiralling welfare bill.. as a proportion of our national income.. its lower than it was 15yrs ago & its pretty much back to what it was under Thatcher.. this idea its out of control is just wrong" Spot on!

if I was a young person being told that the best our economic system can ever offer me is working longer and longer hours to live with more and more roommates and eat worse and worse food, I might start getting this crazy idea that we need a new economic system

I DO NOT like it when capitalists are like “but under communism people will have to do jobs they don’t want to do” as if all the people currently working 80 hours a week at three different fast food restaurants are doing it for the love of the game.

It is a rare thing for the editor of the Daily Mirror, Kevin Maguire, to speak a truth that echoes the pages of The Heartlands Tribune. Yet on Good Morning Britain, even the mainstream media found itself forced to state the obvious. Discussing the government’s commitment and the order from Trump to ratchet up defence spending, targeting 3% to 3.5% of GDP by 2035, an extra £40 billion in today's money, Maguire laid bare the brutal trade-off: "If your choice is to spend a lot more on warfare, you're going to have less on welfare or council houses or health or education filling potholes, whatever you want." The case for the crown, fairly stated, argues that we live in a dangerous world requiring a massive commitment to deterrence. They tell us that without a militarised posture and total compliance with NATO spending targets, national security is compromised. Grant all of it. Assume the absolute worst-case scenario peddled by the hawks in Whitehall. The reality is that's a useful bogeyman for the bottomless pit. First, the threat itself is fundamentally mismanaged to justify the price tag. As Maguire noted, and as GCHQ and intelligence figures have conceded, Russia’s conventional military capability has been severely bled dry in Ukraine. It holds less capacity today as an invading force against NATO territory than at almost any point in recent history. Yet, every defence budget requires a bogeyman. Without a perpetual threat lurking on the horizon, the arms lobby cannot justify its subscription model. Second, where does the money actually go? Westminster treats the Ministry of Defence as a sacred cow, exempt from the fiscal discipline forced upon hospitals, schools, and local councils. Public finances are throwing billions into a black hole, and nothing functional comes out. Despite decades of record funding, our conventional armed forces remain notoriously under-equipped, plagued by procurement scandals and breathtaking wastage. Former ministers resign, parliamentary committees issue scathing reports on procurement failures, and yet the public is asked to throw good money after bad. The argument still leads straight back to austerity. If ministers keep their self-imposed fiscal rules, refuse to tax wealth properly and insist on meeting ever-higher NATO targets, the money has to come from somewhere. That means fewer homes, weaker councils, longer waits, deeper cuts and another raid on the working class. Real security is a council house, a GP appointment, more nurses, more doctors, a functioning school, decent social care and a wage that covers the bills. The real #welfare state now props up defence contractors, private arms firms and their shareholders. Everyone else gets austerity.

Yep. Simple really. I'm Worcestershire. My nearest franchise is Birmingham. In cricketing terms, I do not have any affinity with that franchise whatsoever. I just really dislike when it's taking place as well. The height of the summer should be Test cricket territory.

Wimbledon, the World Cup, and the Open all done and dusted. An ideal time for Test cricket to take place. But instead we block out a period of the summer for this ridiculous tournament. Next Test starts on Aug 19, just before the new Premier League season begins. Well done, ECB.

There’s a bit of a re-writing of history going on: “England are always like this” Not really. 1990, 1996, 1998 - they lose on penalties to elite opposition & are genuinely unlucky. 2002, compete against maybe greatest international side ever. Lose 2-1. 2006: penalties. 2012: penalties. We’ve never seen anything like the last 30 minutes last night. Ever. Certainly not in my lifetime. 12% possession is up there with Iceland as a sporting humiliation.

Nick Robinson to Zia Yusuf: "You say this is all about standing up to the establishment. "You're a multi-millionaire. You made your money selling luxury helicopter charters and rare wines to the super-wealthy. "Nigel Farage is a public schoolboy, a former commodities trader who gets £5m gifts from his friends and lives in a 5-storey house next to Buckingham Palace courtesy of a man convicted of fraud. "Do you really think you are in a position at Reform UK to claim not to be part of the super-wealthy, self-serving establishment?"

People versus the establishment? Are you kidding? Nigel Farage is the son of a stockbroker who went to Dulwich College and then follows his dad into the city, gets gifted millions, promotes crypto and gold bullion, been in politics for decades - he IS the establishment
The establishment smears and attacks have crossed a line. Nigel is absolutely right to call a by-election. This is now about the people v the establishment.

I really don't know what people expect when for the last 50 years, the share of income and wealth going to the top has increased steadily, while their effective tax rates have decreased steadily. That is unsustainable and untenable in political, economic, fiscal and moral terms.
Australia just implemented the highest capital gains tax in the world; the UK looks likely to introduce a wealth tax soon; and now the Democratic Party is moving towards this. xitter.gq/GavinNewsom/status/207…

I really can't stress this enough - sitting in an open plan air conned office working at your own pace is NOT THE SAME as being a classroom teacher in 30D+ heat for 5/6 lessons with 30+ kids with the demand that 'every minute matters'.
