Stepping into the fediverse @Wilmz@mastodon.social
That’s my escapism sorted for the next week or two: the @routedurhumENG from Saint-Malo to Guadeloupe. @pipoceanracing for the IMOCAs @GoodchildSam for the Ocean50s And Armel Le Cleac’h there on his flying sea monster in the Ultim class.

Good update on the latest in the perennial language determines / influences thought question. Still wonder about the causal link, though; isn’t it what a community considers important that influences language rather than v.v.? bbc.com/future/article/20221…
Going to a workshop on our database preservation work for #DigitalPreservation day. Not sure how we’ll be able to sort the wheat from the chaff in those enterprise beasts while the folk who know them are moving on at pace.

Ah. Oops. “Are you excited for the Chinese government to find ways to threaten Tesla’s huge business in that country over content that appears on Twitter?”

Did you know about Germany's Sovereign Tech Fund? sovereigntechfund.de/en.html It's finally doing something about the problem illustrated in this xkcd: so much of our digital infrastructure is reliant on open source tools that are only kept going through good will.

DEEPLY shocked that @Filmhouse @edfilmfest @BelmontFh have ceased trading. My love of cinema and my knowledge of filmmaking have been nurtured in these places. Edinburgh and Scotland have long been centres of cinephilia. They must be reborn somehow.

A girls' school in Iran brought a member of the IRGC-run Basij paramilitary to speak to students. The girls welcomed the speaker by taking off their headscarves & chanting "get lost, Basiji". Teenage girls have been at the forefront of protests for days. xitter.gq/1500tasvir/status/1577…

“who are seen as reliable”
Rumours are swirling that MPs – most of whom did not back Truss’s leadership – are beginning to coalesce around Gove and Shapps, who are seen as reliable, writes @REWearmouth

What a remarkable image. The daughter of Minoo Majidi--a mother of two who was killed by the Iranian regime while protesting for #MahsaAmini--stands at her mother's gravesite. She is defiantly unveiled, and in her left hand she holds the hair she cut from her head.

This might be the most depressing sentence I've ever read in an abstract. When researchers use tools we don't fully understand, we do so at our own peril. nature.com/articles/s41598-0… HT @GaryMarcus.

You won’t be able to understand a dataset until you understand the context in which it was created.

When I interviewed at Apple the PM over the iCloud team said "don't tell anyone, but we don't know where all the data is", and laughed. I've repeated this anecdote to many people over the last couple of years because it blew my naive little mind at the time. I just didn't get it.
There is no documentation of what happens to your data once it’s uploaded, because that’s just never been something the company does, two Facebook engineers explained. interc.pt/3xB22xp

Peculiar waves at Porty; calm conditions, but tall waves breaking on the prom. I think it’s high tide and a residual swell from just the right direction.

This is significant, and awkward for Britain, which has said that its data protection overhaul will unleash tech investment. Via my colleague @g_lanktree, how an e-vehicle firm pulled a U.K. project in part because of the reform proposals.
