Avril 2020, plein confinement, il fait 30 degrés et tu t’apprêtes à sortir ton premier highlight Fortnite sur cette musique
I tracked every new Fortnite map that hit the NEW row from Aug 31 to Oct 23. (20,000+ maps, hour by hour.)
How a launch goes: → ~40 minutes in NEW → players spike, then leave → 1 in 4 maps lands in a genre row ~2 hours after the spike, when most of the players are already gone → genre rows sort by live players, so it drops out again within hours
Epic's own docs say: "Islands that perform well graduate from the testing pipeline."
So I checked.
I took the new maps that performed well by Epic's own stats: top 25% for playtime, favorites and recommendations, launched with 100+ players, no Sponsored. 167 maps. All of them dead within a week.
Good engagement does help early. New maps in the top 25% for playtime, favorites and recommendations kept their players to day 3 more often. By day 7 that edge is gone.
Discover doesn't graduate new maps. It sorts the ones that already have players. @FNCreate @HaroldAtEpic
There is so much more I can say which makes things even worse.

I’m convinced this was peak discovery. You had New and Updated + New and Top Rated, then if your map performed well you could climb through Gaining Traction → Trending → People Love → Homebar. Felt like there was a clear path to the top.

We cant just allow 'horror props' to become a horror genre when updating 1v1s. This is so disingenuous and clearly an attempt to snipe the new collection. Deal with it @FNCreate

Being original is really that hard for some people? 💀

I had a feeling this new logo system was going to cause issues with the similarity checks and i guess i wasn’t wrong, i’ve tried 6 different logo variations so far and every single one keeps getting flagged as too similar 😍 #UEFN

Verbatim, Epic, "Fortnite Discover: Your Questions Answered" (fortnite.com, updated Aug 13, 2024): "We don't give extra weight or preference to any particular island or creator"
Sweeney, Digiday Q&A at Unreal Fest 2025 (published June 9, 2025): Fortnite is "the most effective and fair economy that's ever been seen in gaming"
How come a new account with a new game is eligible to get the highest by Epic given discovery place?
Aka THE BANNER
Would love to know how to apply for this! Cheers.
you already know what that red color means 💀 still not giving up, see you for attempt #3 #UEFN #Fortnite #FortniteCreative

My map has incredible stats, and Fortnite Discover still barely shows it to anyone.
Epic's own docs say "Engagement drives distribution."
So here's my engagement, and here's the distribution I actually got 👇
Slay The Kingdom [ROGUELIKE], first 17 days live:
⏱️ PLAYTIME
- 32 min average session
- 65% of sessions go past 10 minutes
- Nearly 1 in 5 sessions last over an HOUR
- Only 8% of sessions end in under 2 minutes
- Longest single session: 7 hours 14 minutes
- Around 1,280 hours played in total
🔁 RETENTION
- Day 1: 17% average, peaking at 27%
- Day 7: 6% average, peaking at 11%
🎯 CTR
- Peaked at 15.6%
- 15%+ on 4 different days, 3 of them back to back
- 9% average across everything except the row I paid for
People who find this map STAY.
The problem is hardly anyone gets the chance to find it. Most of my impressions came from my own followers, or ones I paid for through the Sponsored Row.
📉 WHERE MY 81,742 IMPRESSIONS CAME FROM
- 42% Sponsored Row (I paid for this)
- 16% my own followers
- 6% search (people looking for it by name or code)
- 5% recents (players coming back)
- 27% Discover's own rows (general, recommended + homebar)
- 4% other
69% came out of my own pocket or my own audience (harder to get followers now btw 🙄).
Epic says new islands are eligible for genre rows "from day one" and get tested for up to 2 weeks "to gather enough real data". Across my whole 2 week test, Discover's general + recommended rows averaged about 1,000 impressions a day. How is that enough data to judge a map?
When I paid for Sponsored, I was getting ~11,000 impressions a day (and it still didn't break even). The day it ended, I dropped to 2,012. Latest day: 1,998.
So what does a new island actually have to do? The playtime is there. The retention is there. The CTR is there. The only way I could get seen was to pay for it.
And how can I improve my map when I have to pay you and your ridiculous prices for Sponsored just to gather any data, as you've removed the follower device?
@FortniteCreate @alexbaileync @Flak @HaroldAtEpic I'd really like an answer on this.

PERSONALIZED SPONSORED ROW CONCEPT 💡 #UEFN
- Instead of bidding against everyone, bid only against people with the same target genre as you
- On the player side, they will only see sponsored islands that fit their tastes/recommendations
- Your target genre is set by whatever your Island genre is
- This could solve massive CPM over-inflation and bad actors
