7 exhausting minutes in my house – at Doylestown, PA
In 1983, a BBC interviewer asked Richard Feynman why two magnets push each other apart — and he refused to answer it. What he did instead is the best seven minutes on thinking ever filmed. Bookmark & watch today, no matter what.

Good. When my oldest son was attending a Mandarin summer program at Ball State, the AirBnb in Indianapolis dinged him for a little splash of water on the floor for $750. I made him video the entire clean up process and photogragh everything so I could see the work in Doylestown. They banked on a screw-up and underestimated my attention to detail. They also would not him use the gym and misrepresented that. Bad job AirBnb! @Airbnb – at Doylestown, PA
Airbnb is introducing a new policy prohibiting hosts from asking guests to strip beds, wash and put away dishes or take trash offsite, as well as imposing their own fines on guests. The policy applies to reservations booked on or after November 20.

#roku @roku This is the second roku switch that makes me think it is broken when I have to change the batteries. So it loses contact with the TV and I have another useless switch. Do you have any thoughts on this serial expense and annoyance? Love to hear it! – at Doylestown, PA

Winnie the Pooh was published one hundred years ago today. I cannot be sensible about this cartoon bear. I am a boy of no brain when it comes to him; all I have to say is that I feel every bit as hopeless with affection for him, every bit as grateful for his companionship in the world of my mind, as a child hugging a stuffed animal. In the screwtape letters, when the young man dies and goes to heaven, he suddenly understands “The dim consciousness of friends about him which had haunted his solitudes from infancy.” The angels have been keeping watch over him in the nursery, whispering to him of divine love through childhood stories and imaginary friends. What we learn about from Pooh Bear is nothing but pure, silly tenderness for its own sake: divine foolishness. It’s enough that I could almost wonder if, when I die, the child in me will cry out as Christopher Robin does at one point in the book: “Oh Pooh! Where are you?” And maybe I’ll hear what Christopher Robin hears: “‘Here I am,’ said a growly voice behind him. ‘Pooh!’ They rushed into each other's arms.” Thanks Winnie, for everything. Happy 100.

A common theme irl. Monstrous men do not tend to sire children capable of replacing them. – at Fountain Hill, PA
new reruns of "Succession" on HBO so that one can revisit at random; having seen some episodes two or three times I am all the more impressed with the dramatic tightness of those riveting scenes, the almost palpable anxiety of Logan Roy's children vying for his (cruel, fickle, non-existent) affection. like "The Sopranos" the series was, in part, an examination of how an American father cannot expect to pass on his (ethically / legally shady) business to his children because they are just not smart enough, or criminal enough, or monstrous enough to take his place.

my favorite part of the Kelly Clarkson discourse is how an extremely talented human singer really just wants a simple, "old world theme", hand-built automaton in an age of AI

This quote from Steve Jobs lives rent free in my head... "People who are genuinely great at something don't compete. They don't care about being compared to others because they're so deep in their own lane that comparison would be a waste of time. They just do their thing."

incredible. anne carson, who just won the nobel prize in literature, suggests she's going to use the money to buy her friend a home. what a gift. imagine the beautiful news stories that would be written if another nobel winner did this for a lowly and poor menswear writer
“It seems a little insane” Anne Carson was sweeping the kitchen floor at her home in Reykjavík, Iceland, when the phone rang and she learnt that she had been awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature. In this conversation with the Nobel Prize just moments after the announcement, Carson shares her advice for aspiring writers and reveals that she has already started planning how to give away the prize money.

The thing about oranges is that they can look fresh and lovely on the outside and be dry or rotten within, or conversely look absolutely foul but then be wonderful and delicious when you open them up. The thing about oranges is that they are just like people.

Friend was moving his 80+ year old parents into their chosen senior living community, found a dusty old reel of 8mm film marked "wedding" while packing everything up. He later tracked down an old film projector and the three of them watched it together. It had been taken in Italy before the war. He was astounded to see that his boring, dowdy dad had once been...a broad-shouldered hunk with a full head of black hair! And then he saw his mother in her glorious wedding dress. His dad said "Now you see how beautiful she is." His mother started to cry. My friend said "I knew why she was crying. Dad didn't say how beautiful she was, he said how beautiful she is."

I love this about skill trees. It is so true. – at Quakertown, PA
The best career advice for young people is to just focus relentlessly on 3 things: 1. Get skilled. Technical skills, writing skills, people-orchestration skills, everything. 2. Get involved contributing to a mission you're aligned with. It doesn't have to be pure bliss and your contribution doesn't have to match your top strengths exactly. But at the end of the day you have to feel some pride in what you did or what you learned. If you can find something like that while becoming skilled in a number of different ways then you'll find ways to increasingly wrap your skill profile around it (and you'll find/develop strengths in your skill profile that you never expected). 3. Pick up momentum. If you do (1) and (2) right then you've got direction and potential and all that's left is to sprint forwards and achieve it. The more momentum you pick up, the better you get, the more real value you produce, the more opportunities you create, the more you get noticed, the more value you capture into your own life, the more effort you want to put in... you create a virtuous cycle with so much momentum behind it that it becomes an unstoppable virtuous cyclone.
