Indian socialists and communists arguing for price controls on a service consumed by the rich, a service with a deeply unprofitable business model, and a service destructive to the climate. This is the India Nehru would have wanted. Not all is lost.

annoying, but hopefully practical, answer: stop paying attention to story and instead watch what the camera is doing

It’s sort of remarkable that Jane Austen has become probably the central figure in English literature after Shakespeare, and arguably the most beloved. All the more so because she never traveled far from home; her life was largely lacking in drama. Early critics accused her of leading an insular existence, ignoring the great issues of the day and limiting the scope of her stories to the home. And yet, as Eudora Welty has noted, “The interesting situations of life can take place, and notably do, at home.” Such was Austen’s genius that within her limited sphere she saw the whole of human nature. All of life is contained within her six novels. She remains our greatest psychologist and one of our wisest philosophers. To read her books is a first step towards acquiring wisdom.

I can’t stress enough that this would mean the complete extinction of human culture. You need art because it connects you to all who’ve gone before you; it challenges you to embrace perspectives not your own. Media generated to your exact preferences is the death of the soul.

imo a lot of people are deeply misreading this as lamenting the death of personal pleasures in the face of efficient goal-attaining when it's a lament of the death of actual goal-attaining in the face of optimized things-shaped-like-goals-attaining

Relatedly: people are obsessed with Delhi’s butter chicken, kebab, parantha and shawarma places, but seem remarkably uninterested in where the people who cook and serve this food can afford to live and how they get to work every day.

One for the greatest documents of high culture in the twentieth century and not just because of its visual and atmospheric splendour but because it adapts one of the greatest pieces of classical dramatic literature better than anyone else.

the letterboxd rating shouldn't matter, nor any other rating -- did you get something out of the film? what did it mean to you, and how? these feelings can't be fully expressed in numerical judgement; art asks us for contemplation more than evaluation.
