This nakeyjakey criticism of Rockstar mission design still lives rent free in my head, Rob Nelson said that they’ll be more freedom in GTA 6 missions
So they probably saw this video too

I think a similar thing is happening in indie games, where the number of games on Steam and the ratio of slop are pushing a lot of people away from trying to discover new releases. It's a weird time.

NEW: Remedy's latest game, Control Resonant, is filled with art galleries. The galleries are filled with real art
When I began talking to Remedy about it, I was delighted to discover who the artists are: many are the game developers' parents
My story...

Like when I make my lists of my favorite indie games, ~50% of them are custom engines or cobbled together on top of frameworks, despite like 95% of games being made in Unity or Unreal now. This isn't a coincidence

As someone who still prefers to make games in a custom engine I wrote, the code is kind of an inseparable part of a game's character, decisions about engine structure and every little bit of code have ripples that can be felt in the end product, even if hard to pick out specifics

Indexed messages won’t show usernames or avatars.
Admins can opt out entire servers; users can opt out their own messages.

Seeing the increasingly negative backlash against the Wardogs devs who, despite their failings, are clearly trying to navigate a problem space no-one has figured out earnestly, really drives home that there are few more toxic player bases than Military-themed Multiplayer FPS.
Randomly decided to watch the show Billions. Currently in Season 3 and very much engrossed. Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti are incredible. Love the supporting cast. So happy I have 7 seasons of this.
There's nothing more satisfying watching the folks who've strung others along for years with projects they've failed to follow through on now turn to the theft-machine. That which flows from it frictionlessly is forgotten just as so. A self correcting system.
How is the internet less private than in 2006, when the whole family shared one computer?
Back then, the internet was weird, personal, and all of ours.
So, we got your favorite meme legends back together to say it louder: What happened to the internet? 1/3

Funnily enough - during DUSK's development, the New Blood team were debating what immersive sims were in a meeting, so David and Dave invited me to come in to talk about it.
Then I never left their Discord and quietly joined the studio.
"System Shock and Deus Ex, they were RPGs. People called them RPGs": Gloomwood's publisher isn't too keen on using the term immersive sim despite it being one bit.ly/4yGRDwD

wild how AI bros seem to think its just the steam-required disclaimer that's making people not buy their games, instead of any other reason

Is your TV on the list? 👀

Free and open source. No root, nothing uninstalled.
This is also why the conversion rate on DLC is pretty bad, and only makes sense once you hit micro-transaction scales of having dozens/hundreds of $3 addons, as the small % of customers buying ALL of them, makes up for everyone else not just buying none, but being mad they exist.
re: airbnb discourse
in college I worked as a server at an upscale steakhouse. we had a few different steak sauces that were made from scratch daily. they were expensive to make, and less than half of the customers that ordered steak wanted sauce, so the restaurant charged $3 for it
we got complaints constantly. just at my own tables, half a dozen times a week I'd get complaints about being "nickel and dimed" for $3 of sauce on a $70 steak. a few times a month someone would mention it in an angry online review, or ask to speak to a manager and demand that it be removed from the bill because "who the hell charges for condiments?"
after several years of this, finally management had enough. they raised the price of every steak by $3, and now complimentary sauce was included with each steak on request. want to hazard a guess about how many customers complained about the $3 price increase on steak? essentially zero.
it was great, from the restaurants perspective! no more complaints, and instead of making $3 on 40% of steak orderers, they made $3 on all of them. and the customers were much happier, despite this deal being absolutely, unequivocally worse for them.
consumers are not rational agents from microeconomics textbooks. very often the *feeling* of what they're being charged for matters way more than the absolute value of what they're being charged. I think that's more or less what happening with airbnb. people don't want to be charged a cleaning fee and then also told they have to clean, even if in the counterfactual world the additional cleaning fee is more than they'd be willing to pay someone to do the required cleaning. a $100 cleaning fee *feels* better than a $50 cleaning fee + "load the dishwasher and take the trash out to the dumpster", even though most people would not pay $50 to not have to do that.

yo @TimSweenyy you should organise an AI game dev boycott where all AI game developers refuse to publish on steam and only publish on Epic
Tim Sweeney is criticizing Valve again over Steam’s requirement for developers to disclose their use of generative AI.
The Epic Games CEO called the policy “abhorrent,” arguing that developers are being forced to make a “political statement” that could be used against them by a “hate mob.”
Sweeney has been criticizing the policy since 2025, previously comparing the disclosure to a “Scarlet Letter” and arguing that AI will eventually be part of almost every game production process.
A worldwide win.
