I’m so damn tired of the rest of us having to put our biometrics onto every site we use because the government don’t trust parents to parent.
The UK is set to restrict in-game chat for under-16s Players will be required to verify their age in order to use communication features

The craziest part about this porn (and sex?) ban is that even the MP defending it doesn't seem to have a clue how it's going to work in practice You "doubt" it'll cover certain acts? Didn't you champion it? You should know!

Quite wild that Andy Burnham has positioned his party as Israel First at a local council level in a week where support for Israel First policies have been thoroughly rejected by the US electorate.

Burnham really did it, he told everyone he was the localism PM and then made your local council sign a loyalty oath to Israel.

This authoritarian, purist bill needs to be belittled and attacked at every opportunity. As do thos who've created it. Mumsnet politics.

Hi there, as the person who introduced the amendments which led to this ban, I can tell you that the law already bans non-fatal strangulation and attempted suffocation. Consent can be a defence in situations where there is not serious harm but is for the defendant to prove.

The UK might as well ban: - Alcohol — Group 1 carcinogen. Causes 7 cancers (breast, bowel, mouth, throat, oesophagus, liver). ~10,500 alcohol-specific deaths/year in the UK; the real toll including cancers is far higher. - Football — Former Scottish pros 3.5× more likely to die of neurodegenerative disease (Glasgow FIELD study). Defenders ~5×. Goalkeepers (who rarely head) same as the general population. Plus yesterday’s fatal collision. - Tobacco — Still ~80,000 deaths a year in the UK. Causes ~1 in 5 cancer deaths. - Nightclubs / live music — UK dance floors routinely hit 95–110 dB. Safe exposure at those levels is minutes, not hours. Regular clubbing linked to permanent hearing damage and tinnitus. - Traditional British food — 82% of UK adults exceed saturated fat guidelines (NDNS). High-fat diets help drive the UK’s leading killer: heart disease. But no. Watching Facesitting is dangeous and needs banning and jailtime. 😱

This is a major problem with MPs' current approach to law making. Introduce legislation > bunch of obvious question marks about the application of a number of its provisions > we don't have to solve this, let the criminal justice system figure it out. Is that good lawmaking?
Replying to @CobaltCherry
Here is the legislation. It has defences and refers to previous definitions already in law. It will be up to judges and lawyers defending defendants to determine whether a crime has been committed. legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/202…

should we be concerned that one of the MP's that twisted the initially correct need for choking education into a ban on 'icky' things between consenting adults, is less than a week later now discussing the dangers of oral sex

So there we have it. If you have a consensually filmed video of someone performing oral sex, if they gag at all, you can be thrown in prison. What the fucking stupid shit is this. Jesus wept.

Burnham's promises to scrap the scheme were hollow. Ofcom (@Ofcom) still intend to mandate that government issued ID is shown to access the majority of sites the public uses in Britain. Essentially, doxxing every user to the government and site. Say NO to digital ID.
Didn't take long for Burnham's pledge to scrap digital ID (@NoToDigitalID) to be revealed as entirely hollow. Showing your passport as a prerequisite to engage with the online world is still remains state policy. The solution was never digital ID requirements (doxxing of every user) as mandatory for every internet user in the UK and her territories. In reality, the solution was not this – it was having the family computer in the living room or the kitchen, and giving your child a nokia, rather than an Android. Standing on the graves of children and reaching for the tools of censorship will always be seen for what it is. The only antidote to the multi-faceted censorship state in Britain is low-tech approaches to parenting, and passing the @ASI Freedom of Speech Bill: adamsmith.org/research/the-f…

We warned that a social media ban would force digital ID and biometric scans just to go online. Now Ofcom has confirmed it. To prove you're over 16, Ofcom recommends methods like banking checks and facial age estimation. All of this invasive infrastructure - and they STILL admit "the risk of circumvention cannot be entirely eliminated, and some children will succeed in bypassing age checks". The death of online anonymity will come at the expense of a policy that doesn't even work.

How about we push to not have age verification everywhere and instead require parents to be parents, what a radical idea I know

Gamers have been contacting my office about being locked out of their accounts and the genuine anxiety this has caused, so I took it to the eSafety Commissioner in Estimates. eSafety agrees it’s not fair and will keep my office updated as they push Steam for better options.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Steam does not lock users out of their accounts. It restricts only R18+ store pages and new mature purchases behind credit card verification for Australian users; libraries, existing games and other features remain accessible. help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/3… rocketchainsaw.com.au/steam-age-veri…

🚨BREAKING: All Britons may need ID to use social media, the UK's online safety regulator today announces “This plan for a government ‘social media ban’ is a national ID system by the back door. Both the government and Ofcom have admitted that children will get around the ban, which means the real effect will be normalising adults and children alike to hand over their passports just to get online. Hundreds of thousands of people without ID, who tend to be poorer people, and many more who don’t want to risk handing their passports over to foreign tech companies will be locked out of huge parts of the internet. The plan will kill anonymity online, whilst the UK’s culture of speech policing is reaching a crisis point. The policy is painfully misguided, an Orwellian assault on free speech and privacy, and will make children no safer at all. The false illusion that children aren’t on social media will cause the companies to abandon all their child safety measures. The Government could be promoting meaningful safety measures and supporting parental controls that genuinely protect children - instead, they’re demanding government ID from the whole population just for uncensored internet access. It is authoritarian madness.” - Silkie Carlo | @silkiecarlo Read ⤵️ telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10…
