After my weekend writing binge, it feels safe enough to share a little of what I've been working on over the past few weeks. Please note that this is more of a "this is what I'm writing right now" sort of post; it's my intention to ride this train until the book is finished or the wheels fall off. Apologies to anyone who was more interested in the other books I was working on until recently, but I do intend to get back to those soon.
Spark of Aether is a YA(ish?) fantasy romance about coming of age, loss, secrets and dragon riding. This is the "Malfoid-inspired" story I've been tweeting about over the past month. It's a romance story between a boy and a girl who are caught up in a mystery and conspiracy surrounding the dragon riding school they're forced to attend, all while learning more about each other, the secrets they're keeping, and the history they share.
I've posted both about the book as well as the first chapter (both free) over on my Patreon page; links will be in the reply. I'd like to share chapters here on Twitter, but I'm still investigating the best way to do that.
Thank you.

I've ponded the Malfoid/Malfoy question for a little while—namely, do you need to include Draco Malfoy at all in a story that already has a Draco Malfoid?
From the outset, let's put the OG story aside: Draco is who he is in that story, it's been told, and it's ended. But, speaking from an alternate universe/fanfic mindset, do you need to include Draco at all?
Other writers can (and have, and will) do whatever they want, but in a story that already has Malfoid in it, I don't think that Malfoy brings anything extra to the table. What would he even add? What purpose does he serve the story by existing? Every character you put on the page needs a reason to be there, otherwise it just overcomplicates things.
Does Malfoy also hate Harry? That's not a novel thing to begin with. Is Malfoy also a rival? Sure, but that's what the addition of Malfoid changes and deepens by her existing in the first place. Does Malfoy hate Harry...and keep hating him? Again, how does that improve the overall story?
If he's there to contrast with Malfoid and to deepen her story, why can't any of the other supporting cast already do that? She can have a rivalry with any of them without making many changes to the original story, but if you turn her into a twin, it muddies the waters.
Too many ingredients can spoil a dish. Malfoy still has his place, but his inclusion should be more than "well, he was already there to begin with."
Just a thought.
Malfoid on Malfoy
There is no doubt that #Malfoid is favored.(Both boy and girl)
Until my dying day, I will always remember my first (and only) semester of University where our new English professor decided to inform us about the "right" way to vote, as the next 4-year election was imminent.
So I raised my hand and asked her "Well, who are you voting for?"
"That's none of your business!" she informed me.
Funny, that.

Here's a reminder that Cowboys & Dragons is available for pre-order! I realize this post won't get anywhere near the reach as my (simplistic) take on the Dune 3 trailer, but at least I'm trying. 🤪

I'm officially a published author.
Insert Door Metaphor is available today.
A broken leg, nearly two years of experimenting with AI, starting a business, and then writing a book along the way.
I'm giving away 25 free copies in the replies.
AI has changed the cost of trying. Have you changed the way you think about what's possible?

Marco Rubio preparing for the inevitable yearning after the official US Government acknowledgement of Malfoid:

The awkward silence was broken as Malfait stepped onto the sand next, her wooden rapier in her hand. “Not bad, Leatherhead.” She raised her weapon in a salute and smirked at him. “Up for one more round?”
Lash eyed the blonde for a long moment. He already had his victory, and felt it was unlikely that Lieutenant Minerva would fault him for turning Malfait down, but something stopped him.
When he didn’t immediately answer, Malfait’s smile widened. Her green eyes seemed to flicker with barely-contained amusement. “What’s the matter? Are you scared?”
Her smile, whether she meant it to be or not, was infectious, and Lash felt himself smiling as well as he straightened. After wiping his face clean of sweat on the sleeve of his uniform, he readied his two-shielded stance again. “Not of you, Sparkles.”
Malfait’s eyes widened in outrage.
Tress Minerva kept her face composed, but Lash could see that much was a challenge. “Alright, Khamer, looks like you’ll get your wish. Same rules as before. Begin!”
The blonde didn’t immediately rush to attack, but Lash had expected as much—she wouldn’t prove so easily predictable and show off the same attacks as the first time. Instead, she circled with him in the pit, holding her weapon at the ready. Malfait didn’t have size or weight on her side, and speed didn’t mean as much in a prepared, practiced fight.
What Malfait did have on her side was magic, and she quickly put it to good use. With one hand still clutching her rapier, the other made wild, quick gestures—when she swirled it around and around, a sudden swirling gust built and rushed around Lash, and the sand tried to blind him; when she swung her hand back and forth, in the same way that she’d slammed the fortress’ door shut the previous day, now sharp blasts of wind struck him on one side or the other, trying to knock Lash off his feet or at least draw his guard down to allow her to strike him. Her quick, fluttery fighting style was very different from the slow, defensive manner Lash was used to.
Lash knew it was no small feat to channel elemental magic while also fighting at the same time, so Malfait had some skill. Every time he felt the same power in the air, a creeping sensation across his skin before she tried to strike him down. He was forced to close his eyes against the swirling sands and took several sharp blows of her rapier to his ribs for it, but with his eyes nearly shut he could still spot her shock of blonde hair through his heavy lashes and knocked away more than three or four of her blows for every successful poke she gave him. He was already bruised from his fight with Eborin; one or two more was negligible.
“What’s the matter, Leatherhead?” Malfait called, shouting as her rapier was knocked away again and again, filling the air with the sound of banging, ringing metal. “You’re slowing down! Are you trying to bore me into giving up?!”
“This was your idea!” he said before lunging forward, knocking her weapon high with one hand while grabbing the front of her uniform with the other. “And stop calling me that,” he added, narrowing his eyes down at her.
“You—! Get your hands off me!” Malfait set both hands on his chest and pushed backwards. When Lash let go, she stumbled and nearly lost her footing, but then came lunging forward again, sweeping and slicing with her weapon, her face a mask of concentration and ferocity.
Lash felt more magic in the air, followed by a sharp pain that shot up his forearm to the tips of his fingers when one of her thrusts slipped through his defenses. Malfait managed to slide the wooden sword between his arm and the leather strap binding his shield in place. A look of triumph came over her face as she twisted her wrist and pulled up sharply, throwing the buckler higher into the arm before it fell with a dull, comical clanging noise on the stones below.
“Ha-hah!” she cried, sweeping the rapier before her with a smile. “Not so sure of yourself now, are you?!”
Yes, this was was inspired by the wand duel from Chamber of Secrets.
No, I didn’t write this on the fly; I had a rapier duel scene already written for Spark and @spadaken giving Malfoid a rapier was too tempting of an opportunity. Many thanks for letting me share my spin on it.

Something people are missing in all the Brazil voting shenanigans:
Funny how a country of 200m+ people knew in one day the outcome of an election when it takes a single US state weeks to do the same thing.
Isn’t that neat?
So, if a certain carpentry-related author was writing a Malfoid book and wanted to collaborate with a big Malfoid video maker…
…who would that be? Any suggestions?
Replying to @MichaelFKane @ryanpatrickauth
Hmm. I'd market it by collaborating with one of the big Malfoid video or art makers, commission them to do an advertisement/cover, and then send it out into the world
