Someone aged 35 earning £13,036 from employment would pay income tax on the amount above £12,570. Someone aged 70 receiving £13,036 entirely through the state pension would, under the proposed arrangement, pay nothing. This doesn’t seem fair.
Exclusive: The chancellor will use his budget this week to protect pensioners and those saving for their retirement as he announces plans to shield nearly one million people from paying income tax John Healey is expected to confirm on Wednesday that the full state pension will rise by £489 to £13,036 - equivalent to 3.9% However, the rise will push about one million people on low incomes who rely on the state pension above the £12,570 personal allowance threshold, meaning they would be dragged into paying income tax To retain the principle that the state pension is not taxable, Healey is expected to announce a rise in the tax-free allowance for low-income pensioners to £13,036. The move will cost taxpayers £200m a year by 2030 It will rise in line with increases in the state pension over the course of this parliament. However, millions of pensioners with higher incomes - such as those who have private pensions - will still pay income tax The Times has also been told that the chancellor has decided not to reduce the tax-free pension lump sum. Pension savers can take 25 per cent of their pension tax-free from the age of 55 up to a maximum of £268,275 There were suggestions that Healey could reduce the tax-free amount to £100,000, but he has chosen to retain the current level The moves to protect pensioners and those saving for their retirement come after Andy Burnham announced plans to end the pensions triple lock - under which the state pension rises in line with inflation, wages or 2.5 per cent - in 2030 to help fund social care thetimes.com/article/47291ec…

SNP conference struggling to attract the crowds... cameras will doubtless focus on the audience later during John Swinney's speech, but there are only 15 rows of seats and there's a huge void at back of the main hall

Good news. Investment in infrastructure makes things better. Who knew? We should try it again one day.

Proud to be in the #Lab26 conference hall to hear @SuzanWKing call out the SNP minority administration in Glasgow for their tactics and threats to use Fire and Rehire on over 23,000 local government workers. A great advocate for our city and our movement. 👑 🌹

There is a criminal lack of good coffee at Labour conference. Too many vats of stewed filter coffee.

Can we please just have a serious conversation about supply side reform rather than just subsidising higher house prices.

24,000 Glasgow council workers now face the biggest fire and rehire in British history. SNP and Green councillors kept that option on the table. They have now ended in the grotesque chaos of the council threatening to sack its own workforce just weeks before Labour’s UK-wide ban takes effect. You cannot play politics with people’s jobs and people’s services. This is brinkmanship over the workers who keep this city running. Rule out dismissal. Get back round the table with all three unions. news.stv.tv/west-central/gla…

It beggars belief that the SNP council is threatening to railroad through fire and rehire before it is made illegal in this country by the UK Labour government. It may not break the letter of the law but it certainly breaks the spirit of it. It’s a despicable way to treat working people. It’s straight out the Tory playbook. All parties need to get round the table and hammer out a deal, and working people should never be threatened like this again. news.stv.tv/west-central/gla…

This means that whisky made in England is geographically protected and can be called English Whisky Why is that an issue?
🥃 Andy Burnham has just given English whisky the same level of protection as Scotch whisky! 😱 MSP for Speyside Laura Mitchell explains why that isn’t a good idea. 👇

UK Defra granted GI protection to 'English Whisky' on 11 Sep 2026 for compliant English production. Govt states this does not affect Scotch whisky's GI or rules, contrary to claims attributing it personally to Andy Burnham. gov.uk/government/new… gov.uk/protected-food…

This scheme is from the UK Government, and funded by the Treasury, not Stormont. It required further negotiations due to EU rules regarding Northern Ireland that prevent reductions in VAT such as this, unlike the scheme's application to the rest of the UK. bbc.com/news/articles/… bbc.com/news/articles/…
