The biggest culture shock I've experienced so far is that the Apple store in Japan doesn't lock any devices to the table

Notoriously corrupt president, Barack Obama, who spied on and tried to jail Trump and other political opponents (in addition to engaging in sedition to try to destroy the Trump presidency) has thoughts on "character"...
Barack Obama: "There's a decency we should expect out of our public officials. I don't know what's happened where the standards of behavior have gotten so low. Because character matters."

She was part of an organized CIA class of candidates that came into office in 2018. The 2018/2020 candidate group was organized in response to the Trump election two years prior. Everyone from within that CIA group was financed, supported and installed in order to assist the U.S. Intelligence Community defend itself and retain power.
I have been clear for some time on where I stand on prosecuting corruption and illegal acts. In a speech a few weeks ago, I said we need to hold accountable the people and institutions who stole billions of our taxpayer dollars and weaponized the government against its people. And we need a list of signature cases that go after some of the most obvious and harmful abuses of taxpayer dollars. If Kristi Noem steered $200 million in taxpayer dollars to a friend's company to make her TV ads, as GOP sources suggest, she should be held accountable. If Doug Burgum gave a $13 million no-bid contract for the reflecting pool, he should be held accountable. And if Jeanine Pirro used the Department of Justice to go after the president's enemies without any legal basis, she should lose her law license, in line with the law.

The death penalty is the ultimate affirmation of life. Anything less is a price tag attached to the victim’s life, that it is only worth 15 years…or nothing, if a jury refuses to convict. The severity of punishment is the metric by which society measures the sanctity of the life that was extinguished. By requiring the forfeiture of the murderer's own life, we affirm the incalculable loss of the victim’s life.

"Socialism" apparently means fighting like hell to ensure megacorporations have a neverending flow of cheap labor!
Statement on Trump Suspending Microsoft from the PERM Program: This is a crucial issue for me as the top Democrat on the Immigration Subcommittee, the only member of Congress to have actually had an H-1B visa, and the Representative for tens of thousands of Microsoft workers. The administration has been consistently working to take away legal pathways for immigrants to contribute their talents to our country, and this is yet another of those attacks. The PERM program is the first step toward an employment-based green card for countless workers who want to contribute to this country, and it lays out a clear process with steps to ensure that this is a net benefit to our economy and does not harm American jobs. Our economy, our communities, and our families depend on immigrants in many sectors, including the tech sector, and heavy-handed attacks like this only hurt efforts to build a strong, stable, and diverse base of workers who have legal pathways to come and be in the United States while also protecting U.S. workers from unscrupulous employers. You don’t fix a broken immigration system by taking a hammer to legal immigration. Microsoft has been a leader in advocating for comprehensive immigration reforms that modernize an antiquated immigration system and provide more — not fewer — legal pathways for immigrants from all over the world to work here and be with their families. Targeting Microsoft or the PERM program in this way simply undermines legal immigration and weakens America’s ability to innovate.

Who gives a fuck? If the high-IQ American left cared about crime victims as much as they do about insane and retarded murderers, and American workers as much as they do about illegal aliens, we'd live in Elysium.

I've figured out what annoys me about this. This whole attitude is telling us that everything is hopeless. I'm a problem solver. Most engineers are. When there is a new risk in the world, we don't throw up our hands and cry, we take a deep breath, assess the new risk, work to understand and mitigate it. Most problems can be solved or at least managed. The attitude here is not "here's a new risk for you to mitigate". It is "you can't possibly mitigate the upcoming risk". They are trying to communicate that you are forever helpless. That's why they get annoyed when people come up with reasonable solutions to their thought experiment problems. Their point is not to accurately describe new risks. Their point is to tell you that things are hopeless and you can't possibly solve this problem. I'm sorry, but that is loser talk. If they truly believe they are in the business of creating a technology that will endlessly invent new and novel risks for normal people and businesses, that is no different than spraying toxic waste all over the town square and then telling the people who try to clean it up that their task is hopeless b/c they're just going to spray more toxic waste in the town square tomorrow. It's deeply anti-social and I'm sick of it.
OpenAI's Noam Brown says air-gapping the computers may not stop a misaligned AI, because two air-gapped machines can still talk by running a CPU hot and reading the temperature change "But I think the major takeaway from the incident is that people underestimated the AI. And we never want to be in a situation again where we underestimate the AI. It's a weird world, because AI progress is so fast that people are consistently underestimating the AI." "So to be in a situation where you don't underestimate it again, when it comes to safety and alignment, you have to have a very, very, very high bar." "You could even go as far as to say, "Well, we should air gap the computers." And I'm not convinced that that would be sufficient." "There are studies, and this is mostly academic, where you can have two computers next to each other that are air-gapped and they're still able to communicate with each other because they have temperature sensors." "One of them is able to run their CPU really hot, and then the other one can actually detect the temperature change, and then that actually gives them a mechanism to communicate." _________ Link and more key quotes from OpenAI's safety related conversations: firesidealpha.substack.com/p…
