So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.

I believe that Japan was under the influence of a bloodthirsty ideology, and the tendency of Japanese to be loyal and trustworthy to each other made your ancestors all go along with it.
So it was necessary to fight them.
But Japanese people are also very smart and perceptive, and can learn things. And after the war, they learned very quickly that we don't have to be enemies.
The cooperativeness, trustworthiness, and loyalty that made Japanese people such dangerous enemies also makes them the best of friends to have.
I believe the use of atomic weapons was justified, perhaps even necessary.
But referencing that history to mock the Japanese people, especially the current generation of them, would be a disgusting thing to do.

More private keys by the Indian certificate authority have been discovered. These are all small numbers.
People are suspecting that they interpreted 384 bit keys to mean that they should pick numbers from 1-384 to use as their private keys.

Boosting this because it deserves wider exposure. The central point that a drop in subscriptions is a *lagging* indicator of business failure is really astute - the kind of thing that should have occurred to me but didn't.
The additional point I want to make is that at the velocity of change today, that lag is much more dangerous than it used to be. By the time you can notice that your customers bailed out of using the project a while ago, it may well be too late to course-correct.
This is, I think, what's going to happen to Adobe. They're like Wile E. Coyote running in mid-air right now - their customer base is furious with them and probably already trying out alternatives like DaVinci and even the new Photocraft. But the famous dark-pattern stickiness of their subscription flow is going to ask that market signal for a while.
And of course the people running the company are probably going to be looking for any excuse to believe that everything is juuuuust fine. There will be a period in the near future during which they'll be telling analysts "Bah! Revenue is in great shape, these would-be competitors are not meeting consumer demand." That is, until revenue falls off a cliff.
Savor the irony. The same dark pattern that made them so profitable is what will rob them of time to correct before an irreversible crash.

The dirty secret of SAAS is that subscription pricing allows you to keep charging customers who aren't really using the product.
The downside of this is that when your subscriptions finally churn, it's a *lagging indicator* of your business failing.
I strongly suspect that there are many, many "dead men walking" now in SAAS, both AI-native and traditional: businesses where the financials may still look fine -- just a quarter or two of stagnant growth, margins are still great, maybe there's an AI narrative going forward, etc. but the *product* is losing utilization and they will lose every single customer to {{AI-native competitor, possibly the big labs themselves}} as the customers encounter those solutions. Those customers become dormant users, but the subscriptions still run for the while.
The actual revenue churn only occurs months or quarters later when the question of "is anyone still using this? do we need to keep paying for this?" is finally answered with a "no" rather than an "i'm not sure".

Can I say something without pissing everyone off?
Look at this loser. Short, chubby, with his gelled back hair, fake Ray Bans and whatever the F is happening with that lower lip happy trail and white undershirt to hide his lack of chest hair.
Loser.
And it gets worse. He’s a single dude who snuggles with his cat before clocking in at a tire store. Couldn’t even get a like on a dating app.
Loser.
And it’s worse. He’s got some spinal thing making him a partial cripple and a pronounced learning disabilities.
Loser.
Does that piss you off? Does telling the truth anger you? Am I not allowed to say the blatantly obvious online?
Does saying the truth EVERYONE is thinking make me a judgmental, ableist prick?
Screw you for judging me.
Stop being aholes to people with the balls to tell you the unvarnished truth.
If this guy had called me, a experienced mariner with the highest USCG license imaginable, and told me his plan to buy a shit ass boat and sail it around the world I would have told this loser he was going to fail.
But he didn’t call me. He took the official motto of American mariners to heart.
Acta Non Verba
Actions not words.
He wrote a letter not to Garcia but to himself.
And if he had called me, how dare I “kill” his dream? How dare me for saying I would have told him he’d fail?
Because fail he did. He only made it to Hawaii.
With his cat.
A cat.
Loser?
Fuck no. He failed. At sea. An unforgiving sea that doesn’t give a shit about your dreams or aspirations or whatever the F is happening with that lower lip happy trail.
A sea that rewards experience and gives absolutely no bonus points because you couldn’t afford better gear because you work in a tire store.
And failure brings experience. And failure makes you figure out how to beg, borrow or steal that equipment you can’t afford.
Failure by a working class loser and his cat inspired millions to fund a second attempt.
Did he take that money and drop it on a perfect boat? Nope. Did he drop the boat he did purchase at a boatyard and say “fix it”? Nope.
He spent months on the hard building out the systems himself.
Now he’s making a solid go.
And if he called me today and asked for advice… what would I say? Well he wouldn’t call me, I have decades of experience but he’s in another league. Above me.
Screw Lionel Messi
Screw Keanu Reeves
Screw LeBron James
Screw whatever sports star or politician or activist or actor you admire most.
This guy is above them.
Now I’m not saying Lionel or Keanu or whoever isn’t worthy of admiration. I deeply respect their talent and work ethic.
But they aren’t tire guy loser sailing with his cat AROUND THE F WORLD nonstop alone:
Fewer people have done that than climbed Everest and he has zero sherpa’s to help.
And nearly every other dangerous sport in earth you’ll get to a hospital in a few days if injured. Not this guy. He is far beyond the max cruising range of any rescue helicopter.
Meet Oliver Widger

America has a gun
With (very few) apologies to Brian Bilston
England is CCTV.
France, a cop with lock and key.
Greece, once free, now bends the knee.
But, America has a gun.
Sweden jails the ones who fight.
Germany fines bad words at night.
Spain forbids the wrong to write.
But, America has a gun.
Holland fines what words you say.
Canada takes your knives away.
Australia says, "you must Obey."
While America has a gun.
Japan will bow and not resist.
Scotland bans what they won’t miss.
Freedom bleeds, but still exists
Because America has a gun.
Better risk the fatal cost
Than find that liberty was lost.
The price is high,
The fight, embossed
Because America has a gun.

So, they are doing some sort of throttling of the Malfoid tag. Here is a post I just made... since I'm one of the only people who has been using the term "Mytho-Poetic" lately, when I search for it, my post appears right at the top.
But the SAME POST doesn't appear in the Malfoid search tag or #Malfoid despite mentioning Malfoid multiple times and tagging it specifically.
So, I think the algorithm has removed most of the major contributors who are adding to the tag from appearing at all.
