This one's a three-star banger, very well done. Go in blind if you can.
Here’s another Halloween haunted-house favorite film. THE OTHERS from 2001. Nicole Kidman stars. Alejandro Amenabar wrote and directed. This very moody film has a twist at the end, which I think viewers should know from the start. Makes every detail more fascinating.

Wild to see this list as an indication of "difficulty": this describes the stock normal university education of 10 years ago. I did classes like this at the utterly un-prestigious Indiana University Southeast from 2012 to 2016.

"we didn't make the film because we had something to say. we made it because there was somethng we couldn't quite grasp." oh my god, if you think about it, this is such an interesting way to approach making a film
Takashi Miike talking about VISITOR Q (2001). There’s a subsection of film fandom that really really needs to try and internalize this mode of creation/understanding.

RIP. Talented filmmaker, a "journeyman" if you will. His episode of Carnivale, "Black Blizzard," was especially excellent. I remember watching that episode with my then-roommate and we looked up the director's filmography, and we intoned, "variety, thy name is Peter Medak"

I love any defense of a political leader that includes 'steel output.' What a wonderful metric. What a closer. Who could possibly be a "dictator" who also increased steel output? Inconceivable.

Lacan 101: if a person is consistently not getting The Thing they keep remorsefully going on about wanting to get, the not-getting-it is probably doing some important work. $◇a.

Rewatching The Bird With The Crystal Plumage for the first time in like 15 years Easy to take Dario Argento for granted, but holy shit. Visionary direction, especially in its cultural context. There was *nothing* else like this at the time. The use of sound and silence alone

The script is...something we accept. You would not enjoy merely listening to this movie. By now, we appreciate these stilted, delirious giallo scripts, because we rationalize it as something endemic to this genre. The phoniness itself (down to the odd diction) is part of a style

The visuals are beautiful, but it's not quite visual storytelling. It's more like the movie *is* a movie, you're admiring the movie as an object, you're admiring how a movie could be so stylish and exciting. We're being *cool*. Caring about the characters would seem babyish

Happy anniversary to The Times They Are a-Changin', the truly cursed Bob Dylan Broadway musical that opened on this date in 2006 (and closed a couple weeks later). For "Like a Rolling Stone," they had the whole cast—wait for it—roll around on stones.

It's not that there's never situations where the centrists are wrong or that ideologues never have a point, but you should be very skeptical of people who commit the fallacy of the excluded middle. They want to exclude the middle to force you to make an ideological choice.
