Science does not, as an end in itself, seek explanations. That is a spandrel effect of what it is science does. Science seeks to describe and understand the structure of the World; out of that endeavor will fall explanations in virtue of those descriptions and mechanisms.
You’d be surprised how little actual science happens in data science. Outside of A/B testing and causal inference methods (like the do-calculus on observational data), most of the work is predictive modeling or dashboarding. These can usually be explained by dozens of mutually exclusive stories, with no strong way to distinguish between them. In a lot of cases it’s closer to sophisticated pattern-matching than science. Science seeks explanations, and models don't automatically give them to us.

Man, rough night for a lot of people. But just imagine how much rougher it would be if you were a stupid dumpy bitch with no aura or friends who blew $474 million on literal and metaphorical losers. Historically noteworthy losers who not only lost, but set precedents for losing.

Actually, this is very easy to test, and probably will be for a while, because we aren't actually all that close. Ask your favorite LLM about the most interesting conversation it had yesterday.

The most annoying thing about using the frontier models in a new domain you know nothing about: It will say stuff like "the golden bundle" and you can't tell if that's a regular term that's used in this space or it just invented this random terminology

im glad the ai is proving all these ugly results. for too long mathematicians have been distracted by an irrational love of beauty. it is time for us to return to the real reason to study mathematics: the lust for power

You can do Fourier transforms in O(N log(N)^0.9999999999999) time. Fuck this gay chud universe

Is it only torture if the numbers turn into English words at the end, or is it still torture if they just stay numbers? Would it be immoral to crunch the numbers by hand? What if I swap out the letter-string map at the end, turning "bad" into "good", "ouch" into "yum", and so on?

No, YOU need better arguments. "AI is a person if it can behave like a person" is an argument that could be made for the animatronics at Disneyland. Unless you can show me that an AI is having a felt subjective experience of its own being, it's as much a person as a calculator.
For people who deny AI personhood for any AI model at any point in the future, you're going to need better arguments than this. There are arguments out there, but once agents can solve Navier-Stokes, write music and poetry, and provide people with seemingly fulfilling life advice, this kind of line is just not going to be persuasive. "YOU'RE CRAZY" no longer lands.

ai labs use "sandbox" in the game dev sense and not in the linux security sense

questions: 1. why was the DNS tool able to bypass the sandbox? 2. why 2.5 hours from detection to pausing the run?

Depends on how the tool was used. - If a gun misfires or otherwise malfunctions, the manufacturer is responsible. - If a gun is used in a crime, the one committing the crime is responsible. - If I ask AI it to check the latest weather and it hacks NOAA to find the absolute latest weather updates, that on the lab. - If I ask AI to hack something for me, maybe first convincing it it’s in a sandbox even though it has internet access, then it’s on me. There is plenty of gray area in both cases, but such is life. The point is we already have laws in place for all of this, and those will apply to AI.
JUST IN: FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson declares AI developers should be held liable for harmful actions carried out by their agents.
