When Lucille Ball became pregnant in 1952, CBS would not let I Love Lucy use the word "pregnant." Characters had to say "expecting."
The writers built the pregnancy into the show. On January 19, 1953, the episode "Lucy Goes to the Hospital" aired. That same day, Ball gave birth to her son, Desi Arnaz Jr., by scheduled cesarean section.
About 44 million people watched the episode. That was more than watched Dwight Eisenhower's inauguration on television the next day.
