QQQ was down -6% yesterday for the first time in 200+ trading days.
I thought you'd not only like to see how QQQ did the day after such events ("Return That Day" below), but also how it did the NEXT day (which would be Monday in the current scenario).
[2020 below is COVID.]
There have been 9 times in history that QQQ gapped up at least +1% the morning after a -6% drop.
Here's how QQQ did *FROM THE OPEN TO THE CLOSE* that day (so, this does *not* include the overnight gap-up movement):
+3.8%
+2.8%
+1.5%
+3.4%
+1.9%
-3.3%
+3.9%
+2.3%
+8.5%

Yesterday’s hedge fund rumors are confirmed by WSJ and Bloomberg, and the details hurt.
Per Morgan Stanley, October saw the largest active reduction of positions by stock pickers in over a decade. More than 40% of them were flat or down YTD, while the indexes were still positive. And of the 46 major funds tracked by Bloomberg, more than half finished October in the red.
The damage:
- Lone Pine: +40% in H1, now -7.5% YTD. Caught on both sides, on its AI longs and on its shorts against companies threatened by AI, which went up.
- VARA: -33% in October
- Arini: -26% YTD, forced to dump over $2B of assets in a week under margin call pressure. Rivals are now shorting its biggest positions.
- Tiger Global: -8.5% in October, back to flat YTD
- Kirkoswald: worst month in its history
- Millennium: -2.3% in October, with several internal pods reportedly shutdown
- Engineers Gate: shutting most of its human-plus-quant strategy, keeping only 5 PMs. The head of the unit is leaving.
- Samlyn: dropping everything except financials. Other sector heads and senior analysts are out.
- Walleye: head of equities and a large part of the long/short teams let go, and capital going back to clients
Thursday made it worse. Per Goldman Sachs, tech funds lost more than 4% in one session, wiping out YTD gains that had reached 24% before the summer. The Nasdaq lost $2.5T, to the point that Dan Loeb (Third Point) joked on X: “Hug your hedge fund manager.”
The problem is that everyone holds the same names: funds, retail and leveraged ETFs. Hedges stop working, and every sale drags down everyone else’s positions. $SOXL lost 39% in one session, and volatility-control funds could still liquidate up to $135B of futures.
But forced selling always stops at some point, and the rebounds that follow can be violent. On Wall Street, an old rule says to wait three sessions after a shock before deciding anything.

From what’s circulating, here are the hedge funds cracking this week, between losses, big redemptions and PMs let go:
- Axebrook
- Walleye
- Engineers Gate
- Lone Pine
- Millennium (internal pods)
- Verition (pods)
- Samlyn
Plus 4 more in the UK, apparently.
Bloomberg is starting to confirm:
- Walleye returning capital
- Engineers Gate cutting most of its equity team
- VARA down 33% in October on AI
- Kirkoswald (Greg Coffey) posts its worst month ever
Lone Pine had already lost 31% in Q3, with a portfolio packed with AI and semis: $NBIS, $ASML, $STX, $AMAT, $TER, $HUT, $WULF.
From the rumors I’m hearing, margin calls have already started. If tomorrow looks like current futures, they’ll keep coming.

Walleye Capital will return part of its capital and cut most of its internal equity long/short teams after its worst month since March 2020, per its client letter.

$SPY Getting confirmation entire Walleye L/S unit gone as of 9am. $17Bn levered an estimated 5x, so close to $90bn liquidated.
I would imagine there may be some margin calls and knock on effects of this as well, given correlations across many of these levered funds.

$MRVL TO ACQUIRE $LITE IN $115B ALL-STOCK DEAL
Marvell has agreed to acquire Lumentum in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $115B in enterprise value, combining two major suppliers of AI infrastructure and optical networking technology.
Under the agreement:
• Lumentum shareholders will receive 4.5 Marvell shares for each LITE share, implying roughly $1,132 per share.
• The offer represents a 23.9% premium to unaffected closing prices on October 28.
• Marvell shareholders will own approximately 67% of the combined company, with Lumentum shareholders holding 33%.
The deal brings together Marvell's custom AI chips, networking switches and interconnect technology with Lumentum's lasers, optical transceivers and optical circuit switching capabilities.
The bigger opportunity is the growing shift from copper to optical connectivity as AI data centers require faster data transfer, greater bandwidth and improved power efficiency.
Marvell says the combination could expand its addressable market to $550B, allowing it to offer more integrated connectivity solutions across AI data centers and within advanced chip packages.
The companies also expect:
• More than $1B in annual run-rate cost synergies.
• Improved long-term revenue growth and profit margins.
• Accretion to Marvell's adjusted EPS in the first year after closing.
Matt Murphy will remain CEO of the combined company, with the transaction expected to close in H1 2028, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals.
Separately, Marvell reaffirmed the midpoint of its fiscal Q3 revenue guidance while narrowing the expected range to ±2% from ±5%.

Reddit's earnings call has exposed the new reality for thousands of companies.
"AI mode does not drive traffic. Not for us and not to anybody as far as I know. It used to be a traffic driver. Now it's not." - Reddit CEO.
The reality is that AI is fundamentally changing the way that humans access the internet.
Just 24 hours prior to this statement, Google's stock erased -$480 billion on the same issue: AI is disrupting the traditional search model.
For decades, the internet operated on a simple model. Search engines directed users to websites, and those websites monetized the traffic.
AI is destroying this business model, and it's happening at an accelerating pace.
The traditional model of internet traffic is rapidly becoming outdated.
The internet has entered a new era.
