AI is incredible at writing code.
But that's not enough to create software. You need to set up a dev environment, install packages, configure DB, and, if lucky, deploy.
It's time to automate all this.

Nathan is (rightly) one of the most highly respected investors in AI, having gone all-in long before the current hype. AI companies would do well to listen to his advice on copyright.
This thoughtful and balanced essay is clear: the AI industry “has a good chance of losing” the fight over copyright, and model builders should be exploring deals rather than burying their heads in the sand.
New on @airstreetpress - our view on the generative AI copyright wars.
We don’t try to settle the legal rights or wrongs, but lay out why we think model builders should get ready to compromise 🧵

"With respect to content that is already on the open web, the social contract of that content since the 90s has been that it is fair use. Anyone can copy it, recreate with it, reproduce with it. That has been freeware, if you like," said Suleyman.
What fucking internet were you using, man?
Because the one that I’ve been contributing content to since the 90s was based on linking sources, blockquotes, and respecting copyright.
Revisionists justifying their content theft do not change reality, Suleyman, and attitudes like yours are why people like me don’t trust you, Microsoft, OpenAI, or any of the other tech giants. You’re thieves.
Microsoft's AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman says content on the open web is "freeware" that anyone can copy or use to reproduce, due to the fair use "social contract" (@sean_endicott_ / Windows Central)

Feels like a good moment to stress again how important it is that legislators require AI companies to keep records of their training data.
If there is reason to believe AI companies have trained on copyrighted work without a license, rights holders will sue. Training records are critical to a fair process under the law.
There would be no downside to this legislation. It is the lowest hanging legislative fruit imaginable.

AI Is Already A Boon For Lawyers 😢
As expected, there will be a lot of copyright lawsuits around data. I suspect Perplexity will be sued next for ignoring robots.txt
Google is in a very interesting position, given that publishers want them to use their data for search but not for AI overviews.
OAI and Google have already set a precedent by paying for data to platforms like Reddit and news publishers.
Eventually, companies may have to pay to use Creators' data.

The 3 major record labels are suing AI music companies Suno and Udio. Here are the two lawsuits in full.
- They accuse Suno & Udio of “willful copyright infringement on an almost unimaginable scale”
- They provide evidence that both companies trained on their music, including outputs that closely resemble their recordings (ABBA, Michael Jackson, Green Day, James Brown, & many more)
- They outline why this is not fair use
- They say this “wholesale theft of… copyrighted recordings threatens the entire music ecosystem and the numerous people it employs”
- They include unknown co-defendants who assisted in copying/scraping
- They demand a jury trial
If you do one thing today, read the full complaints.

🚨BREAKING: @UMG, @capitolrecords, @sonymusic, @warnermusic, @AtlanticRecords, @Rhino_Records & other major record labels sue AI music program Suno AI for copyright infringement. Important quotes:
"Given that the foundation of its business has been to exploit copyrighted sound recordings without permission, Suno has been deliberately evasive about what exactly it has copied. This is unsurprising. After all, to answer that question honestly would be to admit willful copyright infringement on an almost unimaginable scale. Suno’s executives instead speak publicly in exceedingly general terms. For example, one of Suno’s co-founders posted online that Suno’s service trains on a “mix of proprietary and public data,” while another co-founder stated that Suno’s training practices are “fairly in line with what other people are doing.” Piercing the veil of secrecy, an early investor admitted that “if [Suno] had deals with labels when this company got started, I probably wouldn’t have invested in it. I think that they needed to make this product without the constraints." (page 3)
-
"Plaintiffs could have proceeded with this action based solely on eliciting that reasonable inference of copying. Nevertheless, Plaintiffs’ claims are based on much more. In particular, Plaintiffs tested Suno’s product and generated outputs using a series of prompts that pinpoint a particular sound recording by referencing specific subject matter, genre, artist, instruments, vocal style, and the like. Suno’s service repeatedly generated outputs that closely matched the targeted copyrighted sound recording, which means that Suno copied those copyrighted sound recordings to include in its training data. In addition, the public has observed (and Plaintiffs have confirmed) that even less targeted prompts can cause Suno’s product to generate outputs that resemble specific recording artists and specific copyrighted recordings. Such outputs are clear evidence that Suno trained its model on Plaintiffs’ copyrighted sound recordings." (page 5)
-
"At its core, this case is about ensuring that copyright continues to incentivize human invention and imagination, as it has for centuries. Achieving this end does not require stunting technological innovation, but it does require that Suno adhere to copyright law and respect the creators whose works allow it to function in the first place. Plaintiffs bring this action seeking an injunction and damages commensurate with the scope of Suno’s massive and ongoing infringement. (page 6)

Sharing an update coming to Adobe's terms of use next week. As technology evolves, every co's terms of use must also evolve to directly address new concerns on creators' minds. We should have done this sooner, but team is committed to getting it right.

There's this pretty widespread idea that fresh training data for LLMs is "running out", which spells trouble for the teams who are trying to train better models
Has anyone seen this view expressed by the actual leading-edge AI labs - Anthropic, OpenAI, Mistral, Meta?

I don't use Adobe's Creative Cloud because I like keeping my files locally.
But seeing how they think they can use anything you upload there for AI training purposes, I'm filling up my entire 20 GB storage with random Nightshade-poisoned images.
I encourage others do the same!
The General Terms for Adobe are even more data-hungry than the Adobe Stock contributor agreement, which they used to train Adobe Firefly!
Adobe's ToS mentions Machine Learning, creating derivative works, improving the service, etc.
It's a LOT more than they had for Adobe Stock!

ALT Graphic comparing the Adobe General terms and the Adobe Stock contributor Agreement. The general terms have a lot more sections highlighted, mentioning Machine Learning, creating derivative works, and getting non-exclusive sub-licensable rights to your works. The adobe stock agreement just says "Developing new features and services".

Every major generative AI product regurgitates its training data. AI developers know regurgitation will happen - they are aware of this before they start training the model.
It’s not a ‘rough edge’ or a ‘bug’ if it’s expected and universal (as is currently the case). It’s a feature.
Perplexity is scraping the work of journalists at Forbes, CNBC, Bloomberg and other pubs, claiming its tiny, missable footnotes are fair credit. In our case, it also lifted text and artwork.

I think it’s really important to distinguish between “competition” and “unfair competition” when it comes to gen AI.
People talk a lot about AI increasing competition. And increased competition, in general, is good. But most gen AI is created through unfair means - it’s trained, without permission, on the work of the people it competes with. It’s important we reject the mantra of ‘competition is good’ when that competition is unfair.

Pitch for updated version of The Matrix: rather than AI keeping humans captive as batteries (which never made sense), they keep humans as token generators for training data
We each produce 140k to 2.6M words a year. Thats a good 20 quadrillion tokens or so for the whole Earth.

We shouldn’t call generative AI output ‘original’ if it’s the result of running millions of people’s creative labour through a computer program without their permission.
It’s hard to think of anything more clearly derivative.
