Here's today's CFSv2 update on the projected El Niño strength, now peaking at 4.29°C above the 1991-2020 baseline. July's rise is not yet playing out in actual Niño 3.4 SST measurements. The Climate 8-ball is expecting a big jump any day. Stay tuned!

The fossil fuel industry is pushing legislation that would ban local governments from working to eliminate greenhouse gas pollution. Today at the ALEC annual meeting, a committee co-chaired by the American Gas Association will push state legislators to prohibit policies that pursue "science-based" and "100% clean energy" targets, among others. Florida has already passed similar legislation and now the fossil fuel industry is trying to replicate these laws across the country. As we feel the impacts of fires, floods, and heatwaves made worse by the climate crisis, we can't let special interests hack our democracy. Be on the lookout for this legislation in your state and speak out against it where these policies are introduced.

A new analysis in Science of more than 116,000 bird songs has revealed that the astonishing variety of passerine birdsong is built from just eight basic acoustic motifs, like trills, whistles, and harmonic notes. The findings also reveal that local environments greatly shape how birds communicate around the world. Learn more: scim.ag/4wYoVXE
