“Aftershocks” chronicles a year and months of trauma endured by the public health community and aftershocks that have reverberated around the world affecting all our lives.
For an article published today in @pozmagazine’s new issue, I was asked why I wrote “Aftershocks: Trump 2.0, Public Health, and Our Better Angels” and what I propose as a forward-looking public health blueprint to rebuild back better. Read my answers: poz.com/article/better-angel…

In my latest @FT_HealthX blog post, I reflect on a recent @richardhorton1 essay in @TheLancet warning that global health reformers may be constructing an elaborate new order on paper while mistaking its coherence for reality. Read my post: fthealth.org/why-global-heal…

The lesson from #Ebola is that preparedness must happen between emergencies, not only during them. Uganda has shown an effective response. Now we must build on that experience to ensure we are much better prepared for future outbreaks.
I congratulate #Uganda’s government, and all involved in the response, for passing the 42 day monitoring period with no cases of #Ebola. With a focus on preparedness, increased surveillance to find potential cases in health facilities and communities, and careful management of points of entry, countries can keep people and goods moving while ensuring people stay safe, or receive care if they are sick.

We are committed to forging ahead in our support of cities and countries as they face unprecedented challenges, relying on the resilience that has come to define the HIV community over decades.
My latest @IAPAC blog post is about what #AIDS2026 must represent for the global #HIV response. The urgency of now has never been more present for our community to defend what we have and work on building back better. iapac.org/2026/07/28/aids-20…

On #WorldHepatitisDay2026, we urge #HCV screening and treatment scale up to achieve @WHO elimination targets. The pace has been too slow and too many people are needlessly progressing to advanced liver disease and dying. Let’s take collective action.

Silos in public health slow progress when our biggest challenges demand collaboration. Silos also are a luxury we can no longer afford in a world where collaboration is a prerequisite for impact.
I spent the afternoon perusing the abstracts submitted for the global @FastTrackCities 2026 conference and am rightly impressed by both the quality (again this year) and breadth of the submissions. Happy to see an embrace of an integrated approach to urban health.

Proud of our President/CEO for his courage to author a timely examination of the many impacts on public health directly link to US federal policy shifts and budget cuts. #PublicHealth
Happy to announce my new book, “Aftershocks: Trump 2.0, Public Health, and Our Better Angels,” about which I had a conversation today at @IAPAC’s Continuum 2026 conference in San Juan, PR. Available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

A newly reported #Marburg virus outbreak in Uganda is a reminder that global health security depends on strong surveillance, rapid detection, transparent reporting, and sustained investment in public health systems. statnews.com/2026/06/30/marb…

Extreme heat is more than just uncomfortable; it is one of the deadliest consequences of climate change. Heat is a public health issue we must address to save lives. #ClimateChange
⚠️ The rate of heat-related deaths has gone up 23% since the 1990s. Heat-related illness is actually preventable with the right protections in place. Everyone should have access to: 🌳 Cooling area 💧 Drinking water ⏸ Breaks from the heat Prevention is everyone's responsibility. Worth emphasizing that this statistic is beyond acceptable; it is an abrogation of our collective responsibility to the most vulnerable in our society.
Children born in low-income countries are 13 times more likely to die before the age of 5 than in higher-income countries. This is unacceptable. We must break the chain of health inequity and give all children a fair chance to live long and healthy lives.

The purse should never have been tightened. How much time has been squandered on @NIH priorities awaiting this corrective White House action?
Biomedical researchers breathed a collective sigh of relief after the White House loosened the purse strings that had hindered the U.S. National Institutes of Health from spending its 2026 budget on research grants. scim.ag/4uA29EX

Proud to have been part of an engaging closing session at @HealthHIV’s #SYNC2026. Our focus was synchronous advocacy in the face of current US federal challenges to #HIV and syndemic responses. My input: lead with courage and with data to shed light on growing health inequities.
