how many tries does it take opus 5.5 to save a crash-test driver? we gave it a deadly car: an open buggy, no belt, no airbag. at 56 km/h into a wall the dummy flies out. 29 broken bones. opus adds parts, crashes the car, reads the injuries and tries again everything here was built by opus 5.5: the car, the 79-bone dummy, the crash physics, the x-ray renderer and the 7 tries. time: 8h 16m cost: $27

Cool for new cars but it makes me appreciate the retrofit scene even more. Half the cars on the road will never see this update. A ten year old daily with a good aftermarket head unit is still the smartest cheap upgrade.

“Take me to that place we discussed” is a wonderfully human request. Until now, the car has insisted on a rather more formal relationship.

Cars are shared devices in a way phones aren't. If my partner borrows the car, does Gemini still read out my Calendar and Gmail? Per-driver profiles, or a voice check before anything personal gets spoken aloud, would matter more here than on a phone.

Hands-free assistance is most useful when it stays predictable. For a driving context, I’d prioritize concise responses, strong opt-in controls for connected personal data, and making it obvious when information is being accessed.

Cars with Google built in will only give personal responses while you're there with your phone connected. You can also turn Personal Intelligence off in Gemini settings.

@Google I am very disappointed with the decision to remove Google Assistant and force users to use Gemini. Gemini is nowhere near Google Assistant when it comes to basic, everyday functionality. Google Assistant was fast, reliable, and could handle simple tasks such as setting alarms and timers, making calls, controlling smart home devices, and running routines with ease. Gemini is slower, struggles with contacts, fails at some basic smart home commands, and cannot handle certain voice controls that Google Assistant performed perfectly for years. Why replace a product that worked so well with one that still cannot do the basics properly? If Google wants Gemini to replace Assistant, then Gemini should be at least as capable—not a downgrade. Please bring back the option to choose Google Assistant on mobile, or urgently improve Gemini so it can reliably do everything Google Assistant could do.

It's off until you turn it on, and you choose which apps it can read, like Gmail, Calendar, Photos or Maps. ZDNET's example sold me: asking which gate your flight leaves from and whether it's delayed while you're still driving to the airport.
