CENTCOM just confirmed it has a squadron of sea drones patrolling the Strait of Hormuz.
It came out almost by accident. Iran claimed Friday that it destroyed a U.S. sea drone. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) called that false and said every U.S. unmanned surface vessel in the region is accounted for, "including a squadron of advanced sea drones on patrol in the Strait of Hormuz supporting CENTCOM's defensive layer."
Why that matters: for years, Navy drone boats in the region were mostly experiments and surveillance. This year they've rescued a downed Apache crew and struck an Iranian naval base. Now CENTCOM is describing them as a standing part of how it defends one of the most contested waterways in the world, in the middle of a shooting war.
What it didn't say: which boats, how many, or what they carry.
