I may be reading too much into this statement, and I certainly hope I am wrong. But it is hard not to interpret it as suggesting that Netanyahu promised Trump another joint military operation against Iran in exchange for his political support.
In other words, Netanyahu may have effectively committed Israel to another war with Iran to secure his political future, regardless of the potential consequences.
If that is indeed the case, it would be an extraordinary and troubling revelation. Israel cannot afford another war with Iran driven by political calculations rather than a genuine national security necessity.

Gulf foreign ministers plan to meet their Iranian counterpart in a push by Oman and Iran to secure buy-in for a deal temporarily managing shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, as regional states seek a pathway to ease hostilities over the waterway.
The gathering, an Omani initiative, would be the first meeting between the top diplomats from the six-member Gulf Cooperation Council and a senior Iranian official since the US and Israel launched the war against the Islamic republic in February.
It is scheduled to be held on Monday in the Omani coastal city of Salalah, according to two people briefed on the matter. One of the people said the details were not finalised, but that a number of states had confirmed and it was expected to go ahead.

Saudi Arabia's Last Oil Exit Is in Play.
Houthis seized the Red Sea port of Mocha today and are attacking the Hanish islands.
Government forces are pulling back to Dhubab, directly on Bab el Mandeb, opposite Perim island.
Whoever holds that stretch of coast holds the strait.
Why this is the most important oil headline of the week, ahead of tankers off Kharg.
Hormuz is effectively shut.
Every barrel Saudi Arabia has kept flowing since spring has gone west to Yanbu and out through the Red Sea.
Bab el Mandeb is the exit for that route, and the Houthis have declared a naval blockade on Riyadh since July.
Mocha puts their forces within reach of both shores.
The market has priced Hormuz for 7 months.
It has not priced losing the Red Sea too.
If the Houthis take Dhubab and Perim, Saudi crude has no sea route east or west that is not under fire, Suez traffic that recovered 42% in July goes into reverse and the Sumed pipeline into the Mediterranean becomes the only clean path out of the Gulf.
That is not a $100 world.
It is the scenario that takes real Brent toward the 1980 and 2008 peaks.
