Under the current rule earn 1p above the Β£204 weekly threshold you lose all your Carer's Allowance which is a tax rate of 864500%. So 100% is better but still means you work for nothing for between 8 and 9 hours.

Burnham announces a 100% tax rate on carers who work and earn over the limit allowed. Better than the current rule but worse than the 55% tax when people on UC work and higher than the highest marginal rate on high earners (except loss of child care help at Β£100,000).

I suspect the UK Govt has absolutely no clue about what carers are actually doing in terms of replacing broken systems. If we stop, what happens then. Looks like this was headline bait and nothing behind it according to @paullewismoney .
Emily Holzhausen, Director of Policy and Public Affairs at @CarersUK, welcomes the Governmentβs plan to end the Carerβs Allowance earnings cliff edge. Itβs a long-overdue change that could make a real difference to carers and the families who depend on them.
Under the current rules, earning even 1p over the Β£204 weekly limit can mean losing the entire Β£86.45 weekly allowance.
The Government plans to replace that cliff edge with a gradual taper, deducting Β£1 of allowance for every Β£1 earned above the limit. The reform is welcome, though it is not expected to be fully implemented until towards the end of the decade.
Around 180,000 carers reportedly built up Β£300 million in debts between 2019 and 2025 under the existing rules.
But, as Emily says, this is only the start.
The 2021 Census counted 5.8 million unpaid carers in the UK, including 1.7 million providing at least 50 hours of care every week.
Research by Carers UK and the Centre for Care estimates the value of that unpaid support at Β£184.3 billion a year.
That is an enormous contribution to families, communities and the economy.
Yet Carerβs Allowance is just Β£86.45 a week for someone providing at least 35 hours of careβabout Β£2.47 for each minimum hour.
For comparison, the National Living Wage for workers aged 21 and over is Β£12.71 an hour - over 5x as much.
Carer's Allowance remains the lowest benefit of its kind.
Carers UKβs 2025 survey found that nearly half of carers had cut back on essentials such as food, heating or transport. - This is shameful for one of the richest countries in the world.
A full review of the allowance and wider support is essential.
And the need for change reaches beyond financial support for carers.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has set out plans for a National Care Service, including free personal care for older people based on need rather than ability to pay. Better, reliable social care could help people live with greater dignity and give families the support they need.
It could also ease pressure on the NHS, where gaps in care can contribute to avoidable A&E attendances and delays in patients leaving hospital.
For too long, families have been left to fill the gaps themselves.
Recognising carers, properly supporting them and building a care service people can rely on would be a major step towards a fairer and more compassionate society.
This, surely, is what it should mean to be British.

Three down. Three left.
The people have spoken. We have had enough of the chaos, the hatred, the corruption, and the authoritarian idiots who think the world belongs to them.
OrbΓ‘n, Bolsonaro and VuΔiΔ have all been rejected by voters.
Today, Netanyahu could be next. And Trump looks increasingly likely to earn his own big red cross in the midterms.
That leaves Putin.
The rest of us must make sure Moscow gets its red cross too, by giving Ukraine everything it needs to defeat Russiaβs imperial ambitions.
The age of Β«strongmenΒ» is looking a little less strong. And that is a beautiful thing.
Remember when you could wake up in the morning without wondering which country was being threatened, which ally had been insulted, or which international crisis had been manufactured overnight by a man with an oversized ego?
When politics was often boring, diplomacy happened behind closed doors, and world leaders generally tried to solve problems instead of creating three new ones before breakfast?
It wasnβt a perfect world. Far from it. But there was a certain peace in not having to listen to angry old men demanding the worldβs attention every single day.
Imagine getting that peace back. Imagine a world where the morning news is about progress, discoveries and possibilities, rather than the latest threats, lies and tantrums.
We deserve that world again.

The EU will offer the UK a new interim agreement at the November summit.
The UK will accept, allowing it to integrate into certain areas of the EU.
Reintegration will happen (formally or in practice) over the comming years
Even without formally rejoining, the plan is for the UK to return in practice through steps that do not require a referendum.
Europe must be united.
