Fragrant Wheat is Here! 🌾🍿 Lanqin Xia (CAAS) & Yan Guo (CAU) Teams Publish in JIPB (2026)! Targeted mutagenesis of TaBADH1 & TaBADH2 creates transgene-free fragrant wheat with up to an 11.24-fold boost in 2-AP! 🎯📦 Key Technological Breakthroughs: 🍿 11.24-Fold 2-AP Surge: Double knockouts (TaBADH1-aabbdd / TaBADH2-aabbDD) elevated grain 2-AP from 3.80 μg/kg to 42.70 μg/kg, conferring a distinct popcorn-like aroma. 🧬 Asymmetric Gene Redundancy: Discovered that TaBADH1 (Chr 2) plays a dominant role over TaBADH2 (Chr 6) in wheat 2-AP biosynthesis—a novel regulatory pattern distinct from rice, soybean, and tomato. 🧫 Gametophytic Transmission Barrier Uncovered: Identified male gametophyte transmission failure for triple-knockout abd TaBADH2 alleles, establishing subgenome-specific editing parameters. 🌾 Zero Yield Penalty: Field trials confirmed that transgene-free fragrant lines maintained wild-type tillering, grains per spike, thousand-grain weight (TGW), and per-plant yield. A major milestone in quality trait bioengineering for staple cereal crops! 🚀🌟 doi.org/10.1111/jipb.70422 #WheatGenomics #CRISPR #FragrantWheat #JIPB2026 #2AP #AgBiotech

Softer, Stickier, and More Nutritious Rice! 🌾🍚 Yangzhou University Team Pinpoints Master Prolamin Genes in JIPB Study! Published in JIPB (August 11, 2026): Prof. Changjie Yan's team simplifies complex 28-member prolamin gene editing down to a simple dual-gene knockout! 🎯✂️ Key Breakthrough Highlights: 🔍 Phenotype-Driven Target Isolation: Screened a 27-gene multiplex CRISPR library across 5 generations (T0–T5) and 20x WGS resequencing to isolate PROLM25 & PROLM26 as the core endosperm targets. 📉 Proteomic Rebalancing: Dual KO of PROLM25/26 reduced indigestible prolamin by 28.8% with a compensating increase in digestible glutenin. 💡 Nutritional Surge: Boosted in vitro protein digestibility by +10.79% (from 74.61% to 85.40%) and significantly elevated essential lysine content (up to 6.22 mg/g). 🍚 Texture & Taste Upgrade: Lower gelatinization enthalpy (ΔH) and higher RVA peak viscosity created softer, stickier cooked rice with a +7.3 point taste score boost! 🌾 Zero Yield Penalty: 1000-grain weight, yield per plant, chalkiness, and milling appearance remained 100% stable! A streamlined molecular breeding roadmap for functional staple crops! 🚀🌟 doi.org/10.1111/jipb.70371 #PlantGenomics #CRISPR #RiceBreeding #JIPB2026 #FoodTech #AgBiotech

Hypercompact Fanzor2 Enters Crop Breeding! 🌾⚡ Sun Yongwei & Xia Lanqin’s Teams Engineer Fanzor2 to Hit Up to 93.3% Editing in Rice! Published in JIPB (July 2026): Researchers overcome the low activity barrier of eukaryotic Fanzor nucleases in plants through dual RNA and protein engineering! 🎯🛡️ The Engineering Roadmap: 🧬 3' HDV Ribozyme Boost: Fusing a self-cleaving HDV ribozyme to the 3' end of ωRNA (ωRNA-Rz) yielded a 1.79- to 63.02-fold increase in soybean hairy root target cleavage. 🧲 K416R Mutation: AlphaFold3-guided rational design screened 24 variants, locking in the K416R substitution to boost catalytic cleavage by 42%. 🌾 Rice T0 Triumph: Achieved 17.6% to 93.3% targeted mutagenesis across 8 endogenous loci in T0 rice lines, with 15/30 plants harboring bi-allelic/homozygous edits at Os11g0508600. 🧪 First Plant Fanzor2 CBE: Fused catalytic-dead D294A with cytosine deaminase & UGI to deliver up to 8.27% C-to-T base editing (+2 to +13 bp window). Shrinking the editor footprint to unlock viral delivery and complex multiplexed crop modification. 🚀🌟doi.org/10.1111/jipb.70346 #PlantGenomics #Fanzor2 #CRISPR #RiceBreeding #AgBiotech #JIPB2026
