The year is 1873. Your wife tires easily and reads too much. The doctor prescribes the rest cure: six weeks flat in bed, no books, no visitors, fed on milk, forbidden to sit up without his permission. The man who devised it is the most famous nerve specialist in America, and the women come out of it quieter, which is taken as the cure.
The year is 1915. The hospital has a new way of delivering your child. Morphine, then scopolamine, and the mother wakes two days later with a baby she cannot remember having. They call it twilight sleep. The women are strapped into padded cots so they do not hurt themselves while they scream, and the straps are the modern part. The babies arrive blue and slow to breathe.
The year is 1945. The truck comes down your street fogging DDT, and the children run behind it in the white cloud because the man on the back says it is harmless. At the beach it is sprayed over the bathers on their towels. It goes on the cattle, over the barn, and across the kitchen table.
The year is 1948. Your son has trouble with his ears. The doctor slides a rod tipped with radium up each nostril and holds it there for the best part of ten minutes, and you bring him back three more times. Hundreds of thousands of American children get the same treatment. The cancers arrive in their fifties.
The year is 1962. The health visitor tells you breastfeeding is old-fashioned and the formula is scientific. By 1972 fewer than one American baby in four is breastfed at all. The formula is skimmed milk and sugar, with the milk fat taken out and vegetable oil put in.
The year is 1971. The family planning clinic fits a small plastic crab called the Dalkon Shield. Its tail is a bundle of fibres that wicks bacteria up into the womb. 2.8 million are fitted in America before it is withdrawn, and the company goes bankrupt under the claims. It had been sold as safe and superior.
The year is 1983. The doctor says your arteries are the butter's fault. The dripping tin goes in the bin, the yolks go to the dog, the margarine goes in the fridge, and you have the heart attack anyway, on skimmed milk, having done everything right.
The year is 2001. Your 15-year-old is low, and the doctor prescribes Paxil, because the trial in the journal says it is effective and well tolerated in adolescents. The raw data, reanalysed 14 years later, shows more suicidal thinking on the drug than on the sugar pill. The company pays $3 billion to settle. Nobody rings the house.
The year is 2009. The government has spent around £500 million stockpiling Tamiflu for the pandemic, on the strength of the manufacturer's trials. When the trials are finally prised loose five years later, the drug shortens flu by about half a day and nothing shows it keeps anyone out of hospital. The stockpile goes out of date in a warehouse.
The year is 2026. The doctor has ten minutes and a screen. The number is high, so the tablet is for life. The weight is high, so the injection is for life. The meat is bad for the planet and the oil is good for the heart, and the person in the chair is as certain as everyone who ever sat in it.
Every one of those was settled, by a committee, in a journal, with a doubter somewhere being laughed at. The rest cure, the straps, the fog, the rod, the formula, the crab, the margarine, the trial, the stockpile. All of it certain, all of it printed, all of it done to somebody who had asked for help.
You were never the one who was wrong. You were the one it was done to, and the only person in the story who did as they were told every single time.
The apology comes a generation late, in a footnote, addressed to nobody.
The next one is being drafted now.

Joshua Michael found an access token on Flock's public website.
No login required. No authentication. Just sitting there.
He downloaded Flock's entire database. 300,000 device locations. 170,000 cameras. 130,000 other hardware units. 27,000 acoustic detectors.
Made a map. Published it September 23.
The Senate held a hearing on Flock the same day. Cited Michael's research.
Flock panicked.
Sent a cease-and-desist. Used a brand-protection vendor called Doppel to claim trademark infringement.
The map said it wasn't affiliated with Flock. Doppel didn't care.
Michael's site went dark.
Then Proton moved it to Swiss servers.
Now it lives on protonmcp.org. Untouchable. Uncensorable. Hosted by an encryption company in a country that doesn't care what Flock wants.
The irony is crystalline.
Flock left an access token on the internet. Michael used it to download their own data. Published it. Flock tried to suppress it.
Proton said suppressing it is suppressing information.
Which is true.
The map shows Flock has 150,000 more cameras than they publicly claimed.
Shows acoustic detection units mapping human speech across the country.
Shows which police departments have access to the whole network.
Flock doesn't want that visible.
So they tried trademark infringement.
Which only worked until Proton decided transparency matters more than Flock's feelings.
Now everyone can see exactly how many cameras are watching their car. Where they are. Which cops can see them.
Michael warned Flock about the exposed token in November 2025.
Flock ignored him.
Then got mad when he used it.
The surveillance company that claims to protect privacy just tried to suppress the only map showing how much they actually surveille.
And failed.
‼️ Proton is hosting a map of 300,000+ Flock surveillance device locations that Flock tried to get taken down.
Researcher Joshua Michael says he pulled them from Flock's own systems via a token left open to anyone.
Proton calls the takedown "an attempt to suppress information."
Readers added context they thought people might want to know

Symbolism matters.
“It’s just an Easter Egg! Stop overreacting!”
Sure! It is just Jadis blowing up the “Eagle & Child,” which just so happens to be the famous meeting place of the Inklings. It is the place where some of the most important conversations around Narnia were held and where the foundations were laid.
In a time where “subversion” is considered an artistic imperative, excuse me if I’m skeptical of this being anything BUT a purposeful symbol.

RIP Marcia Lucas, ex wife of George Lucas and Oscar Winner for her editing of Star Wars.
She let rip on the Disney Sequels and every single word was true. They never did call her.

Never stop saying "dozen" and "half dozen". Never stop using the word you read in an old novella. Never stop using your regional jargon. Don't succumb to an internationalized English stripped of its whimsy and romanticism in the name of streamlining global commerce.

Derek Sivers said it right:
“Mastery is the best goal because the rich can’t buy it, the impatient can’t rush it, the privileged can’t inherit it, and nobody can steal it. You can only earn it through hard work. Mastery is the ultimate status.”

I saw a girl say that when she feels stuck, she imagines she's 85 years old and gets one chance to come back to her younger self for one day, suddenly, everything feels like magic again, the walk, the music, the sunlight, live everyday like that.

HOT TAKE 🔥🔥🔥
When people say content creation is unsustainable… or the era of doing it full-time is coming to an end…
I can almost sense that they are in a niche that not only relies on Ad Revenue but has a less than $10 RPM (revenue per thousands views) as it’s ceiling, instead of its floor, and low barrier to entry.
Turning a fun hobby (fine to keep it a hobby) into a living, without actually turning it into a business (because fun matters more) is at the core problem of content creation not being sustainable for people who manage to break through the 10,000/20,000 audience ceiling. Which 97% fail to do.
Among the 0.6% that get to 100,000 on YouTube, even those creators (90K+ of them in the U.S.) struggle to go full-time and stay full-time, because they refuse to (or don’t know how to) treat it like a business.
I’ve seen people get 10M views and $10K a month and then crash and burn, because they needed it to be fun, and couldn’t work out the discipline to keep going and keep doing that was working.
They can show up and do work that’s not always fun at a 9-5 job with someone else in charge, but not on their own.

Imagine calling readers of The Lord of the Rings, Paradise Lost, or Leviathan extremists.
That would mean the real threat is people who still read.
At that point you might as well add The Iliad, The Divine Comedy, and The Republic to the list.
Because when a civilization starts treating its greatest books as suspicious, it’s declaring a war on its own memory.
Apple just dropped the M5 Max MacBook Pro and it's an AI Powerhouse. 4x faster AI Compute over M4 Max.
These Specs are insane:
- 18-core CPU with 6 "super cores" = world's fastest CPU core
- 40-core GPU = rivals an RTX 4070 in a laptop
- 128GB unified memory = more than most servers
- 614 GB/s bandwidth = 4x what a DGX Spark gets
- 24-hour battery life
You can now run Llama 70B, a model that required a $40,000 GPU cluster 18 months ago on, a laptop at your local coffee shop.
At ~20-30 tokens/sec it's fast enough to actually use.
The "local AI" revolution just shipped for $3,499.
