“Design your street for the traffic you want, not the traffic you have.” Would love to hear a Mayoral candidate with a bold target like this: 10,000 fewer cars per day.
10,000 fewer cars per day. That’s the stated intent of Rotterdam’s reimagined Coolsingel. All but two lanes have been removed; with a dedicated tramway and abundant space for walking, rolling and gathering. Design your street for the traffic you want, not the traffic you have.

How do the Dutch justify seemingly extravagant spending on cycling infrastructure? They calculate the cost benefit to society. Every penny invested returns many more in long-term savings: public health, travel times, road safety and maintenance, noise/air pollution, and tourism. – at Rijswijk, Nederland

Many hundreds of thousands of Montanans, present and future, are going to be a lot better off because of the dedicated activism of maybe a dozen people.
And the Montana Senate just Sine Die'd after sending all zoning reform bills to the governor's desk! #montanamiracle #yimby #prohousing

Math can be hard, but this video featuring the work of @StrongTowns and @UrbanThree helps to explain how federal, state, and local promotion of sprawl via transportation policy and zoning has drained towns and cities of economic vitality. youtu.be/7Nw6qyyrTeI

NIMBYs come in many forms, but the most confounding are those who call themselves progressive yet abuse laws conceived to protect the environment, to block desperately needed housing, driving up costs and fueling homelessness. bit.ly/3L6Fn2S

Warning signs are already flashing. E-bikes now outsell cars in the US. People are posting on social media about how they feel healthier and happier (and wealthier) after swapping their car for an e-cargo bike. wsj.com/story/the-hottest-ne…

What inspires us most about Dutch planning? They design for the future they want—with collective long-term investments that enable citizens to choose active, social, affordable, enjoyable and sustainable ways to move in and between cities. Shouldn’t that be the case everywhere?

Added to my development bucket list: build a TND neighborhood chock full of modernized Charleston single houses and cottages. Throw in some dogtrots while we’re at it.

It can't be said enough, this type of lawless, ad hoc discretionary review so common in California is the opposite of planning. Planning means establishing clear, workable rules for growth and investing in infrastructure to accommodate that growth.

As an American, it is fucking *mind boggling* how some Europeans can both have a dense, walkable city/village and empty country side within a 10 minute bike ride of their home. How can anyone think our suburban sprawl is better than this? Why do we make this illegal here?
Town & Country, no sprawl. Just as it should be!

Suburbs should look like the picture on the left, not the right. Instead of most developments that destroy the environment, decay communities, & worsen our mental & physical health, we should be able to walk around beautiful neighborhoods for our daily needs. It's common sense!

I wrote a book called Happy City, exploring the effect of design on wellbeing in cities. The book failed to cover the devastation that comes with housing unaffordability. Let me be clear: Making room for everyone is more important than making things pretty for a few.
