Legal scholars read statutes, judgments, and other scholars. Trial transcripts are scandalously overlooked. Judgments present a tidy case. Transcripts show cases being made and unmade in real-time. My new paper examines expert evidence in a big telecom case ⬇️ 1/

Unravelling MAiD (linked in the thread & available online for free) is a required read authored by field & patient experts. It’s a critical examination of Canada’s death program through the lens of law, policy, ethics, disability rights & more. I highly encourage you to read it
I definitely don't say this often enough but I'm extremely grateful to @rljcoelho @TrudoLemmens and @Psych_MD for including me in their book. Not to even mention their tremendous support and encouragement.

Humanists should be snobby about the fact that they are stewarding a tradition that stretches back thousands of years rather than doing busy work involving little technical puzzles. Instead they find dumb “research” niches to fill because STEM gave them an inferiority complex.

I'm convinced that the R1 model will always disfavor the humanities and liberal learning and that we need to be very savvy and strategic in how we understand ourselves and our place within that model. Very few humanists agree with me, I've found.

Some people think that Learned Hand had the perfect name for a judge. But "Learned" was the judge's middle name, not his first name. Hand's real first name was better suited for a lawyer: Billings.

They sure have. And as someone who has testified before parliamentary committees on MAID three times, I can tell you the hostility and aggressiveness towards any criticism or challenge of MAiD during this last round was unparalleled. Senator Wells was a big part of why.
Canadian senators, who are appointed and not elected, have been highly influential in the expansion of MAiD. We have become a warning to other countries yet the activist senators keep pushing.

"Barriers" has become a repetitive buzzword, used as a blanket label for any rule, law, or regulation. Deliberate obscuring of intent when those act as safeguards, protections and requirements to prevent abuse and protect lives. It renders word meaningless & as a crip I object.
Picard is right. “Creating additional barriers to MAID for people with mental illness is discrimination, pure and simple. “

Totally correct & one could add: there’s this little thing called the Rule of law & because of it, MDs are accountable to the law whether they like it or not (as everyone else); the law is the last word; the alternative is MDs above the law (though surely some would love that).

I have a tremendous amount of respect for physicians and the difficult work they do on the front lines of end-of-life care. That doesn’t mean they have a monopoly on legitimate opinions on what we may permissibly do to human beings.

My oped in @TorontoStar on why we must further suspend #MAID #Euthanasia for mental illness & address current problems with MAID practice + separate that from advance requests for MAID. Online version has links for all points made thestar.com/opinion/contribu…

Absolutely.
If there is anyone who you should support for thoughtful commentaries on various issues, particularly MAID and disability-related issues, it is @mssinenomine. You can disagree, and challenge her, which I trust she'd like, but you won't regret from having been pushed to think

I haven’t been writing regularly on substack and part of that is because of health issues I’ve been dealing with. But the other part is I don’t have many paid subscriptions and I’m kind of over watching my work copied and pasted by those who get paid & access to write/speak.

1. It is killing. Euthanasia is the killing of one person by another. 2. The govt itself refers to it as the MAiD regime. 3. Speaking plainly and directly is the most effective way to neutralize deceptive language, such as obfuscation, political spin, or govt doublespeak.

The nice thing about this guy is that he’s auto-disqualifying AND serves as Exhibit A for why Canadian euthanasia has gone off the rails. Keep going Tyler!
A lot of these "dementia patients screaming no at injections" people would change their tune pretty quick if it was antibiotic IV for a life threatening UTI. (Again, something you can give advanced directives for)
