The MW literature is no different than any other controversial subject in empirical social science. You know what the paper says based on the author/s. There is (somehow) always a small methodological difference that can reverse results -- and was not reported by the others.

This is a great example of how bottlenecks constrain the effects of AI on growth.

if they want to have live music performance in some random town in the new jersey suburbs thats fine, but traditional crafts in midtown manhattan really should be a clear nonstarter

If a doctor is going to give me a rigid logic tree, can I not just have the diagram and diagnose myself? That seems much easier for all involved
We know our own brains are terrible at doing EV math on low probability high consequence shit so we just make rules. >Treat a gun like it’s always loaded > Just call the uber > Pilots use non-negotiable checklists >Doctors use a logic tree that always over-tests

A friend of mine who is a high level professional and long time volunteer fire fighter tells me he believes that the fire unions are trying to squeeze out volunteers by continually increasing training requirements to make it too onerous for volunteers to stay in.

It seems we may need to cut the cables
Just got quoted $2,400 to paint a 23 by 13 foot living room. The 4 gallons of paint it takes to do the job costs about $110 at Home Depot, or around $160 if you want Sherwin Williams. This is not a particularly skilled job. You went to trade school, not medical school. You own a brush and a roller. Stop ripping people off, contractors.

I mean clearly at some level every political issue is a dispute about what people should believe? Doomsday preppers start from the clear disadvantage of the fact that doomsday hasn't happened, and the burden is on them to explain why this time is different. But we haven't really produced a compelling account of what is Good and True about the world, and so there's no real burden that has to be satisfied by any party to propose a theory. In this specific case, literally nobody is arguing that animals are people. The case for nonzero animal utility is made a little harder by the fact current humans killed all of the kind-of-human-but-not-really species. But that's super easy to construct by hypothetical. At what point in evolution did humans pass from not-people to people? And why that point specifically over any other point? It's not clear to me that there's a widespread accepted answer to this question so for now everyone kind of has to justify their own crossover point

It appears that the uneven poll closings were not about time zones I guess we’ll have to wait for proof of disparate impact before I make that claim
