How is newcomer Geely performing for UK drivers? Over 5,000+ fault-free miles in his 2025 Geely EX5 Max, Shaun is averaging 220 miles in summer (195 in winter) at 80% charge, with insurance costing no more than his old petrol SUV via One Call: electricroad.co.uk/2026/10/o…

Why don't we just put the clocks forward by 30 minutes in spring, call it even and then never change them again?

Britain’s mobile phone network is really unfit for purpose. Particularly when doing what a MOBILE network is supposed to do — moving! I’m on @EE which is supposed to have the best coverage in U.K. - it’s awful! This isn’t an inherent problem with 5G. Other countries have deployed the same technology far more successfully. Opensignal ranks Britain LAST among 29 European markets for mobile network performance. Denmark achieves 226 Mbps average download speeds against Britain’s 84 Mbps. So what went wrong? 5G typically uses higher frequencies than legacy networks, with shorter effective range and poorer penetration into buildings and vehicles. Reliable coverage therefore requires sufficient mast density, capacity and overlapping cells to maintain connectivity during handovers. Britain hasn’t invested adequately in that infrastructure. Much of our 5G still depends on 4G architecture, while the closure of 3G has removed a legacy fallback. Add network congestion, patchy rural coverage and unreliable handovers, and the result is familiar: phones displaying 5G but unable to transfer data, connections disappearing on motorways and trains, and calls dropping mid-conversation. And where is @Ofcom? It proudly reports 99%+ outdoor 4G premises coverage. But that figure is based on predicted signal strength, NOT independently verified, continuous connectivity. Indeed, Ofcom’s own figures show that only 84% of UK landmass has predicted good 4G coverage from all operators. A signal at a stationary address is not the same as a usable connection travelling at 70 mph. Ofcom has overseen the transition to 5G and the retirement of 3G without ensuring that network resilience, capacity and reliable handovers meet the needs of mobile users. Why aren’t operators required to demonstrate real-world connectivity along roads and railways, with published measurements of dropped calls, failed handovers and data interruptions? We have confused the availability of a technology with the delivery of a service. A mobile network that cannot reliably maintain a connection while mobile is fundamentally failing its purpose. Ofcom should be held accountable.

UK’s new insane EV tax (eVED) from 2028: Pay 3p per mile… but first tell the government exactly how far you drive. Submit your odometer reading + yearly estimate to DVLA. They cross-check it with MOT data. Optional car connectivity can auto-report it for you. Distance only, they say, “no tracking”. Still means the state now logs your annual mileage as a tax record. Replacing fuel duty by turning every EV into a self-reporting meter.

We are being encouraged to ask our pharmacist about minor medical matters rather than take up a GP slot. Has anyone been to a pharmacy where it looks like the pharmacist has time for this? Me neither.

If the world is getting a little too much may I recommend the inexplicably obsolete word ‘latibulating’, from the 17th century? To latibulate is to find a cosy corner somewhere and hide in it.

“Only older people get Parkinson’s.” It’s something we’ve heard countless times, and one that our community continues to hear far too often. But it's a myth. While Parkinson’s is more common in older adults, it doesn’t discriminate by age.

Do you actually need a 7kW wallbox for high-mileage EV driving? Covering up to 15,000 miles a year in her 2025 Honda e:NY1, owner Richell hasn't used a single public charger—relying purely on a 3-pin granny plug during their midnight-to-7am tariff: electricroad.co.uk/2026/10/o…

Just when you were sat wondering what to buy your loved ones for Christmas, I arrive with the perfect solution. Handmade A4 artwork on thick mount card featuring a 3" × 2" photograph by Alastair Hilton, printed on Fuji Crystal Archive paper and finished with hand block-printed song title or lyrics. Each piece is printed, signed, wrapped and packed by Alastair. Each piece is individually created by hand, so no two will be exactly the same. Free UK postage included. Here’s the link to peruse the different artwork pieces. 👉alastairhiltonphotographer.c…👈

It’s ludicrous to pursue Net Zero when the cost to the country is so high. High energy prices affect everything and everyone. Meanwhile Ukraine , Russia and the Middle East burn with the wartime carbon footprint the size of a small planet.
