The Runaways stretched out on a Los Angeles beach in April 1976. Left to right: Lita Ford, Cherie Currie, Jackie Fox, Sandy West and Joan Jett. Joan Jett and drummer Sandy West started the band in Los Angeles in 1975 with Kim Fowley behind them, and by 1976 the classic lineup was in place. Their debut album, The Runaways, came out that year, opening with "Cherry Bomb," sung by a 16-year-old Cherie Currie. They never broke big at home, but they were a sensation in Japan. All five went on to long careers in and out of music, with Joan leading the Blackhearts to "I Love Rock 'n Roll" and Lita scoring solo hits of her own. We lost Sandy West in 2006, at just 47. Photo: Michael Ochs Archives 🎸 The Runaways were huge in Japan, where their 1977 tour produced the album Live in Japan. Did you ever see The Runaways live? 🎸

Lots of people have retired there from Madison and Chicago. But it’s always been a weird more progressive area. The IL 16th is affected by central, but Jo Daviess county always skews left, at one point had the highest LGBTQ population per capita in the 90s.
Most of the rural parts of the Midwest are still leaning to the right. Except the Driftless area, which is the part the glaciers didn't flatten. This area is rural and ovewhelmingly white just like the praire areas yet does not vote the same way. They are now entirely represented by Democrats with the exception of Illinois's weird 16th district where the voters from central Illinois outnumber them. Does anyone have an explanation for why this happens?

Van Gogh was looking very closely. ✨ He painted β€˜CafΓ© Terrace at Night’ on location in Arles after dark. In a letter to his sister Willemien, he wrote that he greatly enjoyed painting at night, right there on the spot. Astronomical research revealed just how closely Van Gogh observed the night sky: the constellation matches its appearance on 16 or 17 September 1888. πŸ–ΌοΈ β€˜CafΓ© Terrace at Night (Place du Forum)’, 1888 Β© KrΓΆller-MΓΌller Museum

21-year-old Olivia Newton-John walking through the crowd with her dog at the 10th National Jazz and Blues Festival at Plumpton Racecourse in East Sussex, England, in August 1970.... Though she’s often thought of as Australian, Newton-John was born in Cambridge, England, in 1948. Her family moved to Melbourne when she was five, and she grew up there. Her grandfather was Max Born, a pioneering physicist who won the Nobel Prize in 1954 for his work in quantum mechanics. As a teenager, she won a TV talent contest whose prize was a trip to London. She moved back to England to pursue music, and by 1970 she was part of Toomorrow, a manufactured pop group that even starred in its own science-fiction movie. Neither the band nor the film took off. Her solo career did. In 1971, her cover of Bob Dylan’s β€œIf Not for You” became her first international hit. She went on to win four Grammys and became one of the best-selling female artists of the 1970s. Then, in 1978, she starred opposite John Travolta in β€œGrease.” Her role as Sandy made her a global icon, and the soundtrack became one of the best-selling albums of all time. She died in 2022 at the age of 73. #archaeohistories

A Chinese-led international research team has identified the fastest-rotating near-Earth asteroid known to date and improved methods for determining the physical characteristics of asteroids that require short-term early warning. The findings mark a breakthrough in the observation and study of rapidly rotating near-Earth asteroids and are expected to enhance capabilities for advanced monitoring, early warning and defense against asteroid threats that allow little time for response, the Global Times learned from the research team on Tuesday. globaltimes.cn/page/202610/1…

Groundbreaking botanical research is challenging the long-held belief in human exceptionalism, suggesting that plants possess forms of spatial awareness, intentionality, and consciousness. For centuries, humans have regarded plants as passive organisms, but pioneering studies are rewriting this view. According to plant neurobiologist Dr. Stefano Mancuso, plants display sophisticated behaviors that parallel those of conscious animals. In laboratory experiments, plants react to anesthesia in ways strikingly similar to humans and animals β€” for instance, the Venus flytrap becomes completely unresponsive when anesthetized. Time-lapse studies further reveal remarkable intelligence in common bean plants, which demonstrate clear spatial awareness by precisely aiming shoots toward supports and even adjusting their growth strategy when they detect another plant has already claimed a support. These findings indicate that consciousness may not be limited to organisms with brains, but could be a more flexible property emerging in diverse life forms. As trees migrate northward in response to climate change, mirroring animal migration, researchers argue that our understanding of β€œmind” must expand beyond traditional boundaries. With over three trillion trees on Earth, acknowledging plant consciousness could transform our ethical frameworks, agricultural practices, and relationship with nature, shifting from viewing plants as mere resources to recognizing them as active, aware participants in our shared ecosystem. [Yokawa, K., Kagenishi, T., Pavlovič, A., Gall, S., Weiland, M., Mancuso, S., & BaluΕ‘ka, F. (2018). Anaesthetics stop diverse plant organ movements, affect endocytic vesicle recycling and ROS homeostasis, and block action potentials in Venus flytraps. Annals of Botany, 122(5), 747–756.
