For the past couple of days I’ve gone from middle to the South to the North of Israel, seeing the continued vulnerabilities of the borders, hearing fierce, but polite, debates about politics as Israel goes to the polls tomorrow. Israelis are fiercely opposed to each other on many subjects - particularly their present PM Benjamin Netanyahu- but in many ways they spoke as one. They want peace, they want to be left alone, they want Iran and its proxies to just leave them alone. But until that happens, they will fight on.

It’s very exciting to be in Israel as it goes to the polls today. This thread explains the complexity of how it works here in Israel and why we may not see a winner for some time. Israelis use proportional representation. In many ways this is the purest form of democracy - and it’s a model Andy Burnham wants to replicate. But Israel is also an example of its flaws: it allows in extremists, can be extremely fragile and means certain blocks are only interested in protecting their own narrow base.

Morning from Tel Aviv! Zionism is beautiful. Zionism created a country of refugees. Zionism created a home for an oppressed people running from antisemitism and murder (this guy is a poor imitation of the sheer hatred Jews face). Zionism created the only democracy in the Middle East and it’s very exciting to be here to see the vote in action.
