Israel has existed for 80 years. It's weird that we still consider modern Zionism as the original definition of the “right to self determination in our homeland”. It already exists.
Ben Shapiro put it well. Modern Zionism is the belief that Israel should not be exterminated. This definition is not only more accurate for this day and age, but it also shows clearly how antizionism is inherently a hate movement.
“And as a finale, Fintan Drury tells us that he's happy to have Jewish friends who agree with him. Since I support the State of Israel but oppose many of its government's policies, just like millions of Israelis, am I therefore expected to take a Jewish purity test to be acceptable to him? That did not work out so well, last time similar demands were made of European Jews.”
Spot on! The demands of purity tests from Jewish people is becoming alarmingly normalised in a lot of Irish society. This has to be called out.
Last Friday, the Irish Times published a letter by Fintan Drury dripping with overt disdain for the Irish Jewish community and for Jews who support the state of Israel. The letter was in response to Fintan O'Toole's recent article regarding attitudes towards Zionism and antisemitism in Ireland.
The letter fell far below the standards of The Irish Times’ own charter which is highlighted in the lobby of its HQ. -
“The Irish Times Trust “that news shall be as accurate and as comprehensive as is practical and be presented fairly.”
“That comment and opinion shall be informed and responsible and shall be identifiable from fact.”
“That special consideration shall be given to the reasonable representation of minority interests and divergent views”
Here is my reply.
Fintan Drury’s latest missive has left me in a state of confusion. He claims that his ‘awareness’ of the Holocaust is a strong motivating factor for his advocacy for Palestinian justice. The Holocaust arose from a single goal - the extermination of all European Jewry, the deadliest manifestation of antisemitism in the history of the Jews. I assume Fintan Drury accepts this premise. So why has he just invoked classical examples of antisemitism in objection to Fintan O’Toole’s recent article warning of the dangers of minimizing antisemitism in Ireland?
Drury’s claims that Israel is a settler colonial entity, that it is an apartheid state and that Zionism is racist are ahistorical, intellectually incontinent and have become tired slogans promoted by advocates who believe that if they repeat them relentlessly, they will become the truth. Using the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism his claims represent clear examples of what many consider antisemitism. The recent motion passed by the Green Party in the UK that Zionism is Racism has been condemned by every single party in the UK who rightly declare the motion to be antisemitic.
More disturbing, however, is Drury’s statement that ‘we must take on Ireland’s Zionist lobby.’ This resonates strongly with the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, a fabricated antisemitic text created by the Tsarist secret police in 1903 promoting the false claim of a Jewish conspiracy which warns of a global Jewish cabal who control the economies of the world.
The tiny Jewish community to which I belong seeks to live in Ireland with exactly the same rights and protections as its fellow citizens. To suggest that it lobbies on behalf of the government of any other country is to invoke one of the most toxic antisemitic tropes, the accusation of dual loyalty. No other ethnic minority is similarly charged. This accusation was a cornerstone of Nazi propaganda which, under Josef Goebbels, evolved into campaign to dehumanize German Jews.
And as a finale, Fintan Drury tells us that he’s happy to have Jewish friends who agree with him. Since I support the State of Israel but oppose many of its government’s policies, just like millions of Israelis, am I therefore expected to take a Jewish purity test to be acceptable to him? That did not work out so well, last time similar demands were made of European Jews.
Why the Irish Times published a letter brimming with such bias and factual indolence is, itself disturbing. The only possible value to reading these words in print is to amplify the importance of Fintan O’Toole’s words of caution.

I see Patrick O'Brien told the French Court he was a "committed humanist" which, in my experience, is often code for "insufferably rude in general".
Patrick, the Irish man who told a Jewish woman that he wish Hitler had finished the job, has been convicted of condoning crimes against humanity and of making death threats.
Remember all the people here accusing the Jewish victim of using the name Paddy as a slur, well now we know she was telling the truth the whole time. Assuming she was lying in the first place is clear racism against Jews. But unfortunately I highly doubt most of them will be doing any introspection on the matter.

Absolutely mortified to see the Irish flag bastardised like this.

Patrick O'B who hurled antisemitic abuse, including a death threat at a Jewish couple in a supermarket in France has just been handed a 6 month suspended prison sentence and a fine.
This is a much heftier punishment than many may think. Forget the 'suspended' part for a moment. If he makes any similar threatening statement he will go to prison and this may apply to him for the rest of his life.
He how has a criminal record which disqualifies him from travelling to a number of countries including the U.S.A. It may also affect his credit rating and his ability to apply for a whole range of jobs in the public sector.
If he is an individual with no experience of the criminal justice system and who has hitherto had an unblemished record, this sentence will be deeply shocking to him. In the end, the only defence against the tide of threatening and casual antisemitic abuse is the application of the law. Such abuse can never be cost free.

Good to see that sometimes antisemitism is punished.

And there we have it, folks.
The Irishman who went viral for threatening a Jewish couple French supermarket was found guilty of condoning crimes against humanity and making antisemitic death threats.
This is what too many Irish people on this site, including an Irish Times, journalist, spread conspiracies about. This is what too many Irish people condoned, justified, and, in some cases, even lauded.
What is notable here, as Daniel says, is that the Irishman’s name has been revealed as Patrick — Paddy.
Will we see any apologies from the Irish people who lied that the Jewish victims were using ‘Paddy’ as an ‘anti-Irish slur’?
Sadly I just do not expect this. Because that would require an integrity that they simply do not possess.

When this Irish man, who threatened innocent Jews in a French supermarket, was first exposed, numerous people insisted that the woman who videotaped him was a liar, who had staged the entire encounter
Because, in their mind, all Jews are liars, seeking to "defame the good name of Ireland."
That's what the "Free Palestine" in Ireland movement truly believes
That's what they mean when they say the antisemitism crisis in Ireland is a "hoax."
They're saying that Jews lie and lie and lie
