It Is A Great Honour To Be a Mallam!
When people call me Mallam and think they are insulting me, I just laugh. If you have ever lived in Arewa, you should know that Malam is a mispronounced Arabic word, Mu'allim, and simply means teacher. Notice I said a mispronounced Arabic word. Not a Muslim word. Malam and mu'allim are not synonymous with Islam. They are rather attached to Arabic, which is a language, not a religion.
For your information, in Northern Nigeria, before and during colonialism, Mallam, with two Ls, was used by both Muslims and Christians instead of Mister (Mr). Christians were commonly known as Mallam Yohanan Dauda or Mallam Musa Emmanuel, etc.
One of the first Christian families in Northern Nigeria was that of Nigeria's longest-serving military ruler, General Yakubu Gowon. They are associated with the Church Missionary Society and Saint Bartholomew's Anglican Church in Wusasa, Zaria, Kaduna State, the oldest church in Northern Nigeria.
Christianity began at least ten years earlier near Numan, now in Adamawa. But at that time, those areas (not Numan itself) were in Cameroon. Therefore, any earlier structure there could not accurately be called the oldest church in Northern Nigeria.
Mr Gowon's father and father-in-law both used the title Mallam at different times.
In fact, General Gowon's father-in-law was prominent in Northern Nigeria as a larger-than-life civil servant known as Mallam Walter Bala Zakari.
But Malam, with a single L, denotes that the individual is specifically a teacher. And it is not unique to Nigeria. In East Africa, teachers, whether Christian, Muslim, or Traditional African Religion adherents, are known as Mwalimu, which is their own mispronunciation of the Arabic word Mu'allim.
For example, the first Tanganyikan and later Tanzanian President was Julius Nyerere, a devout Roman Catholic. Nevertheless, in his country and amongst his people, he did not use the prefix Mister (Mr). He used Mwalimu because he was a teacher.
I have worn made-in-Nigeria clothes since childhood. This photo was taken in 1999. I am proud to be called Mallam or Malam. Either suits me, because I can and will never be ashamed of Arewa or any other part of Nigeria.

This lady is calling out these brands of drinks on TikTok. This is why there's a high rise in kidney diseases. Pls be careful what you give your kids and what you also consume. I am glad she didn't hide the names of these products.

If you don’t travel the world, you’ll think this behavior is backward, but that’s the fun of it. I’ve seen children play at squares with water fountains like this in many different countries. That’s the point.

Surprising that we are debating about this topic. Mr Elumelu was addressed in a way he wasn’t okay with and he corrected her immediately. She took the correction and addressed him properly.
What exactly is the problem?

Abuja is sinking.
The planned capital of Nigeria, one of three purpose-built capitals in West Africa and the newest there, was never meant to flood. Standards were high and every detail was considered in the master plan.
But today Katampe, Wuse, Gariki, Lugbe, Galadimawa and others are flooding. What is going on? What happened to Abuja?
Major drainages are blocked, sewage spills out daily, canals have been narrowed for estates, and green areas sold to estate companies by this government.
This is the story of the capital that was never meant to flood.
gst’s "exaggerations" were actually accurate warnings.
Wike’s conversion of Abuja’s intentionally planned green spaces into real estate is playing out exactly as feared.
Here is a thread of our sustained reporting on Abuja's growing flood risks.

The man was our direct neighbour in Guzape. He was hardly around because he spent most of his time out of the country. In fact, he had just returned from Turkey barely two days before his son killed him.
His children lived in the house and lacked nothing. They even had an inverter, and my sister would often joke about their electricity bill because their ACs were almost always on, especially in this Adelabu Band A era.
Only for the shocking truth to emerge that his own son killed him. At first, the boy tried to make it look like armed robbers had attacked the house. But thankfully, a neighbour’s CCTV camera was reviewed, and it showed that he was the last person to enter the compound with his girlfriend around 2am.
Honestly, this world is becoming frightening. It is heartbreaking that a son could do something like this to his own father! 😪
Billonaire businessman Chief Godwin Chinedu Adimike was reportedly murdered at his Number 3 Hassan Adamu street, Guzape Abuja by his 21 year old son, who is currently a service NYSC member, on Friday May 15 2026. He was stabbed multiple times by his son after a heated argument.
His son confronted him of being stingy with money, citing how some of his friends' fathers, who were not as wealthy, buy cars for their children.
The deceased on the other day, accused his son of being extravagant and mismanaging funds. Following the argument, his son stabbed him thrice, and he died at the spot.
It was reported that on this fate ful day, his son had returned from club with two ladies on. And he killed his father in their presence.
He's currently in police custody.

90% of the iPhone is manufactured and assembled in China. Nobody looks at an iPhone assembled in China and says “China built Apple.”
95% of Tesla cars especially Model X and Model Y are sourced and manufactured in China. Nobody looks at a Tesla and says “China built Tesla”
90% of Nvidia AI chips are fabricated in Taiwan by the TSMC. Nobody says Taiwan built Nvidia.
But when an African/Africans do the exact same thing, suddenly that understanding disappears.
Then it becomes:
“China built it for Africa.”
“Americans built it for Africa.”
Aliko Dangote and Nigeria built the largest single train refinery in the world. He is Nigerian and an African.
