I've heard the voices crying out about the deaths of unborn children; most of those arguments are religious. But I find it hard to hear someone screaming about how terrible it is to end an unwanted pregnancy while at the same time contributing to or advocating for many of the causes that drive women to consider this decision in the first place. While we cry out about the lives lost, we do nothing to help prevent unwanted lives from being created. Birth control may not be something you believe in, but to a young woman working a part-time minimum wage job, a child can mean the end of all her future plans. While we cry out about the lives of the unborn, there is no chorus about the children who are born, that have been given up, willingly or not. I was one of those children whose parent was the state. When I turned 18, I was given my bag of clothes and escorted to the door, and without the help of friends from school, I would have started my adult life homeless. No one spoke for me. While we accuse people of "murdering" the unborn, we stand by as children go hungry and go without medical care, or their parents are forced to go without those things. Dealing with this problem is important. Those 600,000+ lives a year that are given up on could be handled in much better ways. We are never going to stop it unless we actively assault the problems that surround this issue with as much fervor as we do abortion; the problem will never end. If you want to stop abortions, advocate for free and low-cost birth control. If you want to stop abortions, advocate for comprehensive healthcare for all children. If you want to stop abortions, advocate for hungry children in this country and work to end childhood hunger. If you want to stop abortions, advocate for medical coverage for every child, no matter their color, income, or living situation. If you want to save the children, put as much effort into stopping unwanted births before they happen and caring for them once they are born. Because no one wants to bring a child into a world where that child will face hunger, poverty, and sickness. If all you really care about is a beating heart and lungs that breathe until they are out of the mother... you are just making the problem worse. Don't make excuses, make things happen. -- Docism
