K-2 students need direct, explicit instruction with a high quality curriculum and a great teacher trained in the science of reading. K-2 needs to be face- to-face as a non-negotiable. Plans are great, but we must keep our focus with our youngest readers.

4. I’d give serious consideration/priority to bringing K-2 students in person (if circumstances allow) and spread them out as much as possible. I can’t imagine how to teach foundational skills through a computer screen (and many won’t have one).

Consonants retain their identity in a blend so we should not teach them like digraphs, reduce the cognitive load by teaching the skill of blending instead. Read more at fivefromfive.com.au/syllable… #DontLeaveReadingToChance

Reading Teachers - If, following @LucyCalkins and @JSerravallo, you use 3-cueing in your classroom, you are actually training your children to become poor readers. Three-cueing has no support in reading science. The alternative is Synthetic Phonics: parkerphonics.com/post/synth…

I struggle having this conversation with all educators. I believe in this work, unfortunately people decide to ignore the research even with easy access points. Hoping we can move to what is best for kids, egos aside #elachat

Every educator should relentlessly pursue growth. Not because they’re ineffective, or uninformed, or deficient in some way. Pursue growth because no matter how great you are you can be even better. Imagine what might be possible if every educator is learning and growing.

A2: Believe in your people and share the research. The increased focus on and awareness of reading science, alongside curriculum that truly aligns to those practices fosters improved return on the investments in new curriculum and PD. This is an investment in people! #suptchat
