Why are athletes prone to atrial fibrillation and should they stop training when diagnosed? NEXAF researcher @MariusMyrstad has contributed to this story in @ScienceMagazine

Great presentation by NEXAF PhD-candidate @KristofferRJ89 at the #ESCPrev2024 Atrial Fibrillation associated with ⬆️ mortality in endurance athletes. But absolute risk much lower compared to non-athletes. ➡️ Management of CV risk factors important in athletes with AF

Bærum hospital 🇳🇴 is the first site to reach 30 included athletes in The NEXAF Detraining Study on effects of reduced exercise intensity on AF burden in endurance athletes - congratulations @MariusMyrstad @TuridApelland Still including at all sites! 🇦🇨🇧🇪

Andre is currently running a study with @MariusMyrstad  on the impact of training intensity on atrial fibrillation (AF). Endurance-trained (>5h/week) individuals  suffering from AF may participate. Read about the @NEXAF1-study and how to get in touch here nexaf.no/nexaf-research-on-a…

Highly recommended listening : @ALaGerche brilliantly explains #afib (including relation with exercise, sex differences, exercise with afib and distinction from ventricular arrhythmias, starting after 43 Min) + other cardiac conditions in athletes. Great podcast @GlennMcConell1
Now online Really interesting chat with top Sports Cardiologist @ALaGerche Exercise can cause right ventricle “fatigue”, increased coronary artery calcium and atrial fibrillation But, it’s beneficial for the heart Spotify (shorturl.at/qBLN4), Apple Podcasts, YouTube etc

Does vigorous endurance exercise cause #Afib in women? Despite low prevalence of risk factors, we found a relatively high prevalence in older female athletes, suggesting exercise may promote #Afib also in women academic.oup.com/eurjpc/adva… @AfibNo

While some athletes experience #afib episodes during exercise, others have symptoms at rest. Reflecting different mechanisms? We found a 3 to 6-fold higher rate of AF episodes during and within the first 3 hours after training #ESCcongress

What is the temporal association between exercise and #AFib episodes in endurance athletes? First answers tomorrow at the #ESC2023
1 day to go! Looking forward to present first data from The @NEXAF1 Detraining study at #ESCcongress tomorrow on the temporal association between exercise and #Afib episodes in athletes 🇳🇴🇦🇺 Science box 2 4.45 pm! #sportscardiology @KJanssensAU @eivindso @JonMagne

Atrial Fibrillation is the most prevalent cardiac condition in master athletes
I'm not sure if it's a good idea to screen master athletes for CV diseases. But if we are to, we should also look for atrial fibrillation, at least in those >65yrs. Consumer ECGs are suitable sreening tools in this population @ESC_Journals @trygve_berge @eivindso
