CPS Cuts that Don't Affect the Classroom
1) $21M: Eliminate "The Network"
Miami Dade has no bureaucracy like "The Network." Principals there report to the central office & receive more autonomy. And in Chicago we have LSC's who can recommend removal of a bad principal.

Meh i think most kids know what is healthy and what isn't....and they know halloween candy and potato chips taste good. 8 hours, more than one school day, if anything, is too much.
The average American student receives fewer than eight hours of nutrition education a year, and only about half of U.S. schools have district- or state-level food education requirements buff.ly/aJnIYX6
Help! Genuine ?:
In 2013 (the rahm school closings), did cps screw up the sale of buildings, i.e., did they have too many rules on who could buy closed schools and how the property was to be used? Or was it simply real estate in areas developers saw no potential growth/profit in?
CPS Parent retweeted
something to look for on the horizon at cps, the budget that was passed over the summer will not hold up
the positions that were given back on the assumption that general assembly would provide more funding to all illinois school districts in veto session will be recalled
Idea for CPS to save $ instead of closing more schools but might get people to call me a Trump:
End Spanish language ed in K-2nd grade. At that age, kids are better off if they learn to read in english.
Consolidate some K-2nd classrooms, save $, better life for kids too.
I love that @biggs4chicago talked about academic standards in her victory speech.
I don't love that she keeps talking in generalities about community involvement in school consolidation decision. It sounds good but is such b.s. but there is a way to do it

No community will ever say "yes, please, close the school my kid goes to!" Community involvement is 100% a farce if engaged like this early on.
But there is a community that needs to be engaged...

If a pharmaceutical could double the rate of learning and, under the right conditions, eliminate socioeconomic achievement gaps, we'd be falling over ourselves to make it available to every child.
In education, we call it Direct Instruction. And we're still arguing about whether it's too scripted and authoritarian.
I'd like to look at it more, but @CTULocal1 @debbypo victory in 1A is quite impressive, given this map.
--Hilario lost her district to Biggs
--Pope won with 64% in a 3 candidate race
--Pope was far outspent (unlike in 2A where inexplicably the billionaire skipped)
Saw this, wondered how many CPS elementary schools were severely underenrolled by the metric "how many schools have 10 or fewer sixth graders?"
The answer: just 6 of 454 CPS elementary schools have 7-10 6th graders. (No school has 6 or fewer).
ty @Beckyvevea for the file

One Harlem middle school has just six sixth graders. Now NYC wants to close it as the city confronts a growing crisis of underenrolled schools. chalkbeat.org/newyork/2026/1…
Does CPS publish this data in easily accessible form? I know we have severely underenrolled high schools, but how many CPS elementary schools have fewer than ten sixth graders?

Iowa's new governor. Love his first sentence. J.B. Pritzker has sadly not focused on this.
flagging for @ChicagoContrar1 so Paul Vallas can endorse his fellow suburbanite.
Anyone good w maps? I'd love to see a side-by-side of this vs who won district races. It appears to me that @biggs4chicago won some districts in which the CTU district candidate (DeBerry, Pope, not sure who else) won.
Who said it better?
Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates is now claiming Hilario Dominguez’s 18-point loss was the result of outside spending “rigging the results” in the race for board president.
This comes less than 24 hours after Gates invoked the threat of a teachers strike.
This kind of rhetoric should be called out for what it is.
The Chicago Teachers Union’s political leadership is refusing to accept the results of this election.
I know she knows more about politics than I of course but incredibly accurate predictions from @Stephanie_Skora.
6 of 7 listed below won (all but Brown). And Girl I Guess correctly didn't predict wins from the other 4 CTU-endorsed who lost (Hilario, Bannon, Thotakura, Dunneback)

My 7 are:
Peralta, DeBerry, Rios-Sierra, Zaccor, Brown, Blaise, Lopez.
Pope, Lozano, and C. Anderson could also easily win, so there's a realistic path for a 50/50 split Board.
A repulsive moment in the School Board President campaign. I didn't know that @biggs4chicago 's campaign manager was the same person who survived harassment from a powerful person in state politics. And campaign managers are campaign managers not candidates for a reason

And the campaign manager didn't make herself the issue.
But @HilarioForCPS called her out by name on the debate stage. An attempt to silence, to intimidate.
I am so glad he lost more than his hair yesterday.
