Notice the focus on adults' feelings and not whether or not students are actually learning.

something to look for on the horizon at cps, the budget that was passed over the summer will not hold up the positions that were given back on the assumption that general assembly would provide more funding to all illinois school districts in veto session will be recalled

If a pharmaceutical could double the rate of learning and, under the right conditions, eliminate socioeconomic achievement gaps, we'd be falling over ourselves to make it available to every child. In education, we call it Direct Instruction. And we're still arguing about whether it's too scripted and authoritarian.

Who said it better?
Chicago Teachers Union President Stacy Davis Gates is now claiming Hilario Dominguez’s 18-point loss was the result of outside spending “rigging the results” in the race for board president. This comes less than 24 hours after Gates invoked the threat of a teachers strike. This kind of rhetoric should be called out for what it is. The Chicago Teachers Union’s political leadership is refusing to accept the results of this election.

Among non-CTU winners: one is endorsed by INCs/ Urban Center, but not Common Ground; one only endorsed by the Urban Center (whose opponent was backed by Biggs); and one who got the Common Ground endorsement, but was uncontested and didn't campaign. Who knows where she stands?

Based on what I see so far, I would not be surprised if most CTU candidates outperform Hilario in their subdistricts

A Debby pope volunteer today told me she was mad that “they’re trying to tie Debby Pope to Brandon Johnson.” I asked if she thought it was maybe because Brandon Johnson was the one who appointed her to her position? She didn’t seem to understand.

People in Chicago--including many school board candidates--need to understand that this is the reality. Birth rates are down. The kids are not *there* to be recaptured. Work to "bring families back" to CPS is probably changes the picture on the margin, but not by a lot.
I estimate that birth rate is by far the biggest factor in public school enrollment loss. Next up: unsubsidized sector switching, then ESA/vouchers. On the latter: AZ, FL, WV & likely TX are much more impactful on public enrollment than elsewhere, likely due to homeschool subsidy, not tuition.

Julie writes honestly about CPS as a parent, so her support in this race means a lot to me. Thank you, Julie. A board member’s job is to engage families and answer the hard questions. I’ve done that in District 6 and will keep doing it as Board President. cpfinsider.substack.com/p/it…

Listen I understand y’all want your kids to have their phones at school bc you worry about them and I don’t really feel super strongly either way about school phone bans but why do almost zero parents go as hard on the concerns about how many teachers are saying your kids literally don’t know how to read. This is the future of America and we genuinely argue more over whether or not your kid should be able to have a cell phone than how/why standardized test scores have drastically declined and kids are multiple grade levels behind on reading comprehension

Teachers and parents agree on what public schools need next. NPU survey parents. E4E polled teachers. Five priorities came out on top: 1. Every kid needs a trusted adult at school. 2. Struggling schools need support. 3. Kids need real help learning to read. 4. Funding should follow student need. 5. Kids need protection from bad tech and training in good tech. Under the READ Act, schools would have to tell parents when their child is at risk for reading difficulties or reading below grade level. Parents deserve that news early enough to act on it. The Senate has until the end of the year to pass the READ Act. Call your Senators and ask for a vote before time runs out.
