Land value is publicly created. Taking some of that to pay us dividends gives everyone a stake in the success of our economy.

I see Inheritance Tax is back in the news today. People need to understand that these arguments will not be resolved without addressing the elephant in the room: land. Landed property is the biggest part of most estates, and the one that tugs at the heartstrings hardest. However, a house is not just the building that someone paid to put up, but additionally- a monopoly claim on a site whose value is created by everyone else (the nearby station, the good school, the planning system- and ultimately the fact that the state will defend the title). We treat those as one family heirloom, yet they are in different moral categories. Leave people free to pass on what they made, but not the claim on the national commons. Even if the only asset involved is the house that looks, to many families, like their children’s last way onto the ladder- over time this will create a hereditary landed class at the expense of the wider nation. The decent settlement is to collect the land’s publicly created value as it accrues, and stop using death as the moment we finally notice the problem.

Thirty years of portraying rising house prices as a good news story must rank among the most protracted misinformation campaigns ever conducted - you don't actually need conspiracy theories when the media does it without anyone else's bidding.
I can feel the shaking heads across the country as they read this. As decades of misguided belief in ever-up house prices finally begins to fade and reality sinks in. Many would have made different calls if the media had covered this before it was too late. 2022 was the top.

Scrap stamp duty, replace with land value tax. Encourage a more mobile/dynamic economy where younger people earning well can move closer to work and where older people can downsize; the tax system shouldn't penalise either of these things.

Rent is not just payment for a building. A big part is payment for location: jobs, transit, parks, schools, customers, density. Henry George asked why that location value, created by the city, should be privately captured. That is the Georgist housing question.

"A land value tax means the state wants you to own nothing!" Except the house which it isn't taxing, your wages which it isn't taxing, your purchases which it isn't taxing, your retirement income which it isn't taxing... other than that, you'll own nothing!

#Georgism Subsidizing demand for something fully finite like land doesn't often end too well For anyone wondering why: Land being fully finite means that, as demand goes up, supply doesn't go up to bring prices back down. Instead what happens is much... reddit.com/r/georgism/commen…

Despite what critics say, land value tax separates this wheat from the chaff. LVT discourages real estate buying for speculative reasons and encourages real estate buying for its use value
Taxing non-income-producing property is wrong. Homeowners should not be forced to work to pay "rent" to the government for the privilege of living in their own homes. Property taxes should only be levied on income-producing property, as the income provides a means to pay the tax.

Land value tax would solve this. LVT reduces sprawl and encourages densification and in-fill development. Its also a tax that increases revenue as land value rises so it's a self funding mechanism for transportation and infrastructure.
Sprawl makes having good transit almost impossible.
