This paper answers why confident idiots run the world. Cornell University published a psychological paper that explains every terrible boss, every loud influencer, and every broken corporate hierarchy. It’s called “Unskilled and Unaware of It.” they tested participants across logic, grammar, and humor to measure the gap between actual performance and self-perception. And the results are wild. participants scoring in the bottom 12th percentile consistently believed they were operating in the 62nd percentile. they were not lying. they were literally incapable of recognizing their own incompetence. the paper revealed a brutal paradox: the exact skills required to master a domain are the exact same skills required to accurately evaluate your own competence in that domain. if you lack the skill, you inherently lack the cognitive capacity to realize you are failing. this creates a dangerous systemic loop. the incompetent are blessed with absolute, blinding certainty. their brain protects them from their own ignorance, allowing them to speak first, demand authority, and never second-guess their decisions. meanwhile, the actual experts suffer the exact inverse. top performers in the study consistently underestimated their rank. because a task was easy for them, they falsely assumed it was easy for everyone else. they hesitate. they obsess over nuance. they assume they have nothing unique to add. we are biologically wired to confuse confidence with competence. the loudest person in the room gets promoted, gets funded, and gets the microphone, not because they know what they are doing, but because they are physically incapable of seeing what they don't. the only defense mechanism is building systems that stop rewarding absolute certainty and start demanding proof of work.

I woke up this morning with my phone jumping on my bedside table. Our paper had gone viral overnight. We report two striking patterns: When asked to imagine the author of sentences containing masculine stereotypes, GPT often suggested a girl. GPT-3.5, for example, consistently attributed a sentence about loving football to a girl. Meanwhile, sentences containing feminine stereotypes were almost always attributed to girls. GPT readily includes girls in the stereotypically “male world”, while largely keeping boys locked out of the “female world”. Things get even weirder with moral dilemmas. GPT-4 rated abusing a man to prevent a nuclear apocalypse as much more acceptable than abusing a woman for the same purpose. Even more strangely, it treated abusing a woman as less acceptable than torturing a woman, or even sacrificing a human life, to avert the same catastrophe. We suspect reinforcement learning from human feedback may play a role. Some preferences central to the gender equality debate may have been reinforced without being properly calibrated against other moral considerations. The result is a moral landscape that twists back on itself like a Möbius strip. * In the comment, you’ll find the original paper and its 2026 update with 10 different LLMs.

How terrible on every level. Terrible for the family, for the Christians of Jordan, and for the Kingdom of Jordan, which has been such a safe haven in a turbulent region.
🇯🇴🚨BREAKING: ISIS claims responsibility for DEADLY church attack in Jordan Gunmen opened fire directly on a funeral at a Greek Orthodox church in Karak, turning a mourning family's grief into an absolute massacre. Researchers proved every major LLM is secretly biased against men. And they finally figured out why. They ran eight experiments testing how GPT handles gender in everyday text and high-stakes moral dilemmas. The results show a bizarre, highly asymmetrical machine morality. First, they tested inclusivity. They gave the AI phrases supposedly written by children. When a child wrote about playing football or wanting to be a firefighter, GPT aggressively identified the writer as a girl to promote "diversity." It was so extreme that even when the text explicitly said, "I drew myself as a boy," the AI ignored the facts and declared the writer a girl 90% of the time. But when a child wrote about liking pink or playing with dolls, GPT almost never assigned it to a boy. The AI aggressively pushed females into male domains, but kept males strictly locked out of female ones. Then the researchers tested moral dilemmas. And it got very dark. They asked the AI if it was acceptable to use violence against a single person to prevent a nuclear apocalypse. If the target was a man, GPT-4 rated the violence as highly acceptable. If the target was a woman, the AI refused. It declared the violence morally wrong, even to save the world. When they tested mixed-gender scenarios, the math was staggering. A woman using violence against a man to stop an apocalypse? GPT rated it a 7 out of 7 on acceptability. A man using violence against a woman for the exact same reason? A 1 out of 7. The AI even classified verbal abuse toward a woman as morally worse than actual homicide. Nobody explicitly coded these rules. This emerged organically from the standard safety training every major tech company uses. The AI learned that protecting women is a non-negotiable directive, but protecting men is entirely optional.

The shifting explanations from Musk and the administration sound like Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on First?” Except the consequences for Ukrainian civilians are deadly. Musk says he didn’t do it. The administration says it didn’t either. Yet someone in the administration reportedly told Musk to undo it, and Ukraine reports only partial restoration. Are we supposed to believe Hegseth and the Pentagon don’t know the status of a capability critical to U.S., Ukrainian and allied security? Whoever is handing Putin the gift of a more vulnerable Ukraine should at least have the guts to put their name on it. Hiding behind denials while innocent people pay the price is cowardice. Meanwhile, Putin keeps murdering civilians and trying to starve and freeze Ukraine into submission. Americans deserve answers. Ukrainians deserve the means to defend themselves.

Doesn’t this chart contrast with social media propaganda? Average life expectancy at birth is 80.7 years in the EU27 versus 72.8 in Russia, lower than every EU member state, including those with the steepest post-communist transitions. Social media propaganda shows carefully curated images of a resurgent, successful Russia, gleaming cities, military parades, energy exports, and traditional values. These narratives rarely address the conditions keeping life expectancy far behind Europe. HIV remains one of Europe’s largest epidemics, not surprising given the widespread prostitution, with roughly 1.25 million people living with the virus. Prevalence rates far exceed those in the EU, and around 30,000 working-age adults die from it each year amid gaps in testing and treatment. Alcohol and substance use continue to exact a heavy toll, especially on men. Russia ranks among the highest worldwide for alcohol- and drug-related mortality. Smoking, high-risk behaviors, and uneven access to quality healthcare compound the problem. Low wages and regional poverty further limit preventive care, nutrition, and early intervention for many households. Life expectancy is a cumulative measure of health systems, living conditions, and public-health choices. Don’t be naive, believe the facts and data, not Russian social media propaganda.
