Some news. Today we’re launching our nonprofit Nature.Health.Global. to help build a future that is resilient to emerging disease threats, supports healthy ecosystems & our own communities, & one in which we make decisions based on science naturehealthglobal.org/annou…

A newly published study from Thailand has identified a bat coronavirus with the ability to bind the same human cellular receptor used by SARS-CoV-2. Researchers also found that antibodies from COVID-vaccinated individuals could neutralize its spike protein in laboratory experiments. Both findings are significant. But how much do they actually tell us about the risk of another coronavirus jumping into humans? A closer examination of the study reveals useful science, important limitations, and several conclusions that deserve more cautious interpretation. A thread on what we know, what remains uncertain, and why the distinction matters. 🧵

We’ve already found evidence that some bat guano harvesters & local community members had antibodies against a range of bat-CoVs & other worrying viruses: i.e. evidence they’d been exposed/infected living near & working in the cave 6/

Viruses don’t stop being pandemic threats just because they have been used as a political tool to punish scientists. Always glad to see this important work continue

Despite the headwinds, all co-authors decided to continue working voluntarily on these analyses even though federal funding was canceled. NHG remains committed to publishing research from the sadly now-shuttered EcoHealth Alliance. Your donations help us ensure this. 12/ naturehealthglobal.org/donat…

This work is part of 20+ yr intl. collaboration between scientists in USA, China, Southeast Asia that has led to dozens of important discoveries but has been disrupted by conspiracies surrounding the origins of COVID-19. We are grateful to our collaborators/co-authors & to the US & intl. agencies funding this work. 11/

This work demonstrates proof-of-concept for a risk assessment pipeline that can be applied to other viruses, wildlife, geographic regions where the host cell receptor for a virus is known & serology tests are set up 9/

The paper gives strong support for the premise that wildlife sampling, if done as part of a One Health “Smart Surveillance” strategy, can provide public health value, even without the need to isolate viruses 10/ pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pn…

What we found in bat samples was striking – a group of new bat-CoVs closely related to SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. One of these (RpuRB21065) can bind human ACE2 almost as well as SC-2 & better than RaTG13, suggesting potential for infecting people 7/

We hypothesized that because RpuRB21065 is so closely related to SARS-CoV-2, people who’ve previously had COVID or been vaccinated were likely cross-protected against this virus. Using two different state-of-the-art serology assays we showed that that prior infection or vaccination would indeed be protective. 8/

With @CREID_Network funding formerly to EcoHealth Alliance & in collaboration w/ @ChulalongkornU @dukenus @ThaiRedCross & others, we sampled bats & people at Ratchaburi Cave 1 hr West of Bangkok where ~3million bats fly out every night & locals gather to watch the spectacle 4/

By targeting our viral discovery fieldwork on known zoonotic reservoir species in emerging disease hotspots, at sites where humans wildlife & livestock coexist & where people have high-risk exposure pathways, we maximize chances of identifying & helping prevent spillover of new viruses 3/

Our work directly answers questions about the value of proactive surveillance in wildlife as part of a global strategy to prevent pandemics. We laid out a plan for this in a 2022 PNAS paper, calling it One Health “Smart Surveillance”. 2/ pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pn…

Let this sink in—The UN has adopted a new global pandemic preparedness declaration, approving it with a vote of 153–3… however, the only countries to vote “No” were US, Israel and Argentina. Even Russia, North Korea, China, Iran, and Yemen voted with the rest of the world.
