Electricity is NOT the same thing as ENERGY.
Colorado's renewable-energy cheerleaders are celebrating this 50.9% electricity statistic. Here's what they're leaving out.
According to EIA data, wind and solar supplied just 7.1% of Colorado's TOTAL primary energy consumption in 2024.
Nearly 90% came from fossil fuels.
And what happens when winter arrives?
On January 24, 2026, during a major winter storm, Xcel's Colorado electricity generation came from:
- Natural gas: 66%
- Coal: 19%
- Wind: 7%
- Solar: 5%
That's 85% fossil fuels versus 12% wind and solar when reliable power was especially important.
Meanwhile, Xcel received approval for another $157 MILLION in annual revenue, increasing average residential electric bills by approximately 4.8%.
Colorado families need affordable electricity, heated homes, transportation, food production, and functioning hospitals.
Reliable energy isn't a luxury. During a Colorado winter, it can literally be the difference between life and death.
Celebrating annual generation percentages while ignoring total energy consumption, winter reliability, and household costs isn't serious energy analysis. It's selective accounting.
