The Virginia Key (VAFK1) tidal gauge recorded a preliminary peak of 2.54' (MHHW) between 10-11am this morning. Since consistent records began at the site in 1994, this is the 3rd highest peak value recorded behind Hurricane Wilma (#2 - 2.55') and Hurricane Irma (#1 - 3.63').

Now that the tropics have turned quiet again, let’s look ahead to this winter.
A super El Niño means big boom/bust potential for the Carolinas.
There have only been 3 super El Niños on record since 1950. Here’s what happened in each of those winters.

The great pumpkin escape! 🎃💨 A giant inflatable pumpkin made a run for it in Cary, North Carolina, just outside Raleigh, as strong winds from Isaias sent it rolling away. And yes, the pumpkin made it back home!

45 known tornadoes (3 EF3’s, 6 EF2’s, 25 EF1’s, 7 EF0’s, & 4 EFU’s) occurred prior to Hurricane Milton’s landfall, the most tornadoes associated with any tropical cyclone in Florida history.

If #Isaias sounds familiar, it should.
Hurricane Isaias hit North Carolina in 2020. It brought bad storm surge to Oak Island, high winds to the coast, and lots of tornadoes to NC.

October 1st starts a new "water year".
This 12 month period is a clean reset for seasonal rainfall, and captures all of the winter rather than splitting it in two.
October 2025 - September 2026 was our *driest* water year on record dating back to 1903 for Greensboro.

PEAK SEASON AND NO HURRICANES!
Here we are at the statistical peak of hurricane season...and still, not a single hurricane has formed in the Atlantic this season. And I am TOTALLY cool with that!
As of today, 2026 ranks third for the latest first hurricane of the season, but by tomorrow morning, we'll blow right past the two years currently tied for the record.
Even better, the tropics are completely quiet right now, with nothing expected to develop over the next 7–10 days. If that continues, there's at least a chance we could make it all the way to the end of September without a hurricane.
Obviously, there's still plenty of hurricane season left, so we can't let our guard down just yet.
But after some of the seasons we've endured over the years, it's pretty refreshing to see one setting records for inactivity instead of intensity!
